Berto and I were in contact during the production of the Philippines '44 game. I came to know him as a really nice man. He was delighted that a game on that subject was being produced and helped me with various things in the game, most notably the spelling of the placenames. I tend to go overboard on the addition of labels to the maps and we were working with US Army Corps of Engineer maps. Notorious spelling errors. Berto and his wife helped me with the correct spellings in many cases. More are still on the map to correct, I am sure, as he didn't have time to do a "total map survey" before project needs took him away from the work.

I wish we could have stayed in contact but I resigned when the game came out and I did not have his email address. I would have loved to hear more of his stories of living over in the Philippines. He lived in the northern valley on Luzon (Cagayan Valley area) and told me stories of his life there. I know many Filipinos from my church in Calif. and also used to pick up senior Filipinos on Sunday morning. Several of the men were WW2 veterans. Like Berto, they are gone but their contribution to helping to free their country is remembered.

Just sad that he is gone. He would want us to carry on in his absence and not sorrow long about his passing. We honor his memory today and always.
