Dierk,

I'll go along with this, but I do have a question with regard to regaining strength -- would this apply just to "casualties" from straggling or are you also talking combat losses? If you are talking stragglers rejoining the unit then perhaps it should apply to units who are "stationary", rather than "resting". A straggler can catch up to a unit that is in line trading volleys just as well as he can catch up with the bivouaced unit. Another point is that to truly model straggling the rate would change over time -- in other words, the first hour or two straggling would be close to non existent, but by the 3rd or 4th continuous hour it would be higher and if a player pushes on hour after hour after hour then the staggler rate would become so extreme such that the unit would have to be rested. If you include fatigue from movement, then this could be tied to the straggler rate, ie. 0 movement fatigue has a lower straggler rate (maybe even 0), whereas unit with max fatigue might lose several percent. Otherwise it might be too hard to model, but I would have a bit of a problem with losing the same number of stragglers in hour 1 as hour 10 of a forced march.

I think these are valid points, but in order to get it at all, in my experience, we will have to accept a good deal of abstraction. Just as all combat losses are lumped together in a single figure, I think it will be better to have units lose and regain strength at all, even if the model is rather crude.
