I posted a link to civil war talk radio quite a few years ago but thought it might be time to repost. If you would like to hear discussions about recent Civil War research as well as interviews with leading civil war authors, you might find this program interesting. The site has really been improved in recent years and it is now very easy to find and listen to past broadcasts. I just listened to the broadcast about the battle of Big Bethel myself. Not very gentlemanly of you Confederates to 'mask' your batteries I must say...

In the line of discussion, I was wondering if our General Nelms is into Texas, and especially Comanche, history. Just finished "The Searchers" excellent book by Glenn Frankel, about the making of the movie, directed by John Ford, from the book written by Alan Lemay, taken from Texas history based on the abduction of Cynthia Ann Parker, mother of Quanah Parker, in 1836. The book covers all that and more. Makes me want to get on a plane and fly to Lubbock. At the very least, I just ordered the movie to watch for like the 100th time.

never read the searchers but empire of the summer moon covers the same topics and is an excellent read. doesn't make me want to go to texas though

Well a big chunk of that Comanche history took place just to the north of me. Been to Quanah, TX a time or two and Palo Duro Canyon several times where they Comanche's last holdouts were defeated.

I was guessing you've seen a bit of it. Recall that "True Grit" was just remade a few years ago (better than the first, IMO) and that makes me think they should redo the Searchers, and film it where it happened this time instead of Monument Valley in Utah.

While John Wayne is famous for many iconic roles, and even though I'm partial to films like True Grit or Big Jake, I think he did his best acting in The Searchers .
