Anyone a fan of the Gingrich trilogy? Although I enjoy Jeff Sharrah's novels, they seems to leave something of the "human element" out of them. These feel like a bit of fresh air. Of course, when you compare all Civil War fiction to Michael Sharrah, it seems like everybody comes up a little bit short. I feel these read like a novel instead of historical fiction. Like the authors, I agree that Lee would have most likely have hoped for a political victory instead of a military victory. Even have won at Gettysburg, Lee would not have had the military might to take Washington, in my humble opinion.
