Playing the Confederate side in this Lt.'s Cup match, and also being new to the game, when I looked at the objective points for Kernstown, I decided that 6 points was not worth my time. I thought this meant that it was only worth 6 points to the CSA for the entire game and chose to ignore it. I could have walked in unopposed on Turn 3 but, as I'd planned to move in a different direction, chose not to take the village.
On Turn 3, I noticed that the VPs were showing -6 and I thought something was screwy. After receiving Turn 4, I saw that the Objective Points had changed to -8 and knew that I had misunderstood the intent of the 2/6 noted for that hex. By that time, I had moved so far away from Kernstown that I would have had to march back under fire with cavalry behind. I chose instead to conduct an all-around defense in the woods. This would have left Ross and me sniping at one another with cannon fire unless he chose to attack. I don't believe he would have done that because as new to this game as I am to this game, even I wouldn't attack an equal opponent defending in woods with nearly 2 dozen field guns. As the VP's for Kernstown would have crept higher each turn, the best I was hoping for would have been a minor loss.
Before I sent my last turn, I did an extensive search for this, even looking in the Change Log. It wasn't until after Ross asked if I wanted to start anew, that I searched the boards and found a thread that discussed this. As a result, we have agreed to suspend the game - I offered to take a Minor Defeat and will post the conclusion to the DoR.
My recommendation is that something about this be stickied to one of the boards, at least until it makes it into the User Manual,or at a minimum, the changelog.
