A general question for those visiting the MDT -

At which battle was Lee's ANV at its zenith? When were they the toughest, meanest, best led, and most unbeatable army?

Feel free to vote in the poll and post your reasons as well.

I voted for Antietam because Lee + Jackson + Longstreet were great and only the most dedicated of veterans were left with the army by the time the battle started.

Chancellorsville. A masterpiece. Outnumbered two to one, on the attack and a stunning victory.

A favourite Civil War personality of mine also played a significant role in that battle, Jedidiah Hotchkiss. He found the route that Jackson took to outflank the Union.

Gettysburg, but before the defeat and retreat. 75k battle hardened troops and best chance to end the war on favorable terms IMO due to being in northern territory between DC and Baltimore and the Union command changes and recent defeats....

Chancellorsville because afterwards, the soldiers were of high quality, but the leadership never recovered.

And Longstreet missed the entire Battle of Chancellorsville. Lee could win without Longstreet but not without Jackson.

I went with Fredericksburg as the last time the ANV was fully concentrated before other strategic considerations began diluting the army's strength... until the intense pressure of the Overland campaign.
