That doesn't surprise me. I followed the raising of the Hunley very closely, basically everything but moving to South Carolina, and it was intriguing the way the US Navy distanced itself from the whole thing.
In essence, the Friends of the Hunley Organization (
www.hunley.org) was left to carry the burden. Sad that the government of the United States in no way wanted to get involved, but not unexpected given the traditional Navy reticence to acknowledge the efforts of the CSN.
Sorry, don't mean to sound bitter, but when one really understands what an amazing piece of machinery the Hunley was (is?) and the courage and dedication of the men who sailed her, it makes me angry that the US Navy (where I served as a submariner for 11 years) seems to not care.
