Can anyone point me toward info on how/why the AI fires back in turn PBEMs? I fire at an enemy line and might get fired back at by it, or a nearby arty bty or some skirmishers. I'm a little confused (though not much fussed!)

Monsieur that is what Monsieur White was saying if there's opportunity fire why should it not be opportunity charges and Art lembers up and run or gunners flee!

There is no logic behind it as in which target it will choose. There is a percentage of return fire or op. fire for things moving or doing things like changing formation, pressing the charge button for cavalry, etc.

Just figure that its random with no one incident being a sure thing. Even melee attempts dont always meet with return fire. Figure that the unit attacking timed its move foward after the defender had fired and was reloading their cannon or muskets.

ah ha. No logic. I like it.

I was just wondering if there were any tactical doctrine I should be adopting to avoid the worst of it, you see. Rank beginners often trip over things for a long time before a 'penny drops' and they learn the tricks of the trade. :D
