I thought I had read somewhere about the ability of French dragoons dismounting and firing.

If true, how do you do it ?

I may be wrong but I recall you use the change formation button. Unfortunately though none of the French dragoons are actually classified as well hmmm dragoons. I am guessing but I would say it would say 'Dragoons' if they were classified in that manner like say 'Heavy'.

In Jena, there are many French cavalry units classified as Dragoons,

For example, in the two days of Jena scenario, Prince Murat arrives at 11:00 am with several hundred. Many more arrive after.

I will try the change formation, but I am pretty sure I tried that with an error message the result.

Hi John
What I mean by classified is not the fact they are dragoons like the X sqd of X regm. I mean I think they actually need to be a troop type called 'Dragoon' like a Leger btn is 'Light' and for some reason they have not been classified that way.

When you right click on them they are just classified as cavalry if you see what I mean.

I have several Jena games active and have tested it and no cigar. Hence my comments.

But anyway Bill will probably post on it soon.
Helga a round here for the Marechal!

You can open the oob files in any text editor. Look at the entries for dragoons. If you see a D in the 4th column of the entry then the program will treat them as dragoons. If, you see an L then it will treat them as light cavalry.

So this designation from the OOB means that they are not really Dragoons, just Light Cavalry ?

John,

Allowing cavalry to "dismount" was a program change/upgrade that was discussed during Jena's development, but was never actually implemented.

Only the Zehdenick.oob file will you find dragoon types for Jena:

B 1 Brigade
Begin
L 2 5 94 GB Roget
L 1 5 100 Col Phantom
L 1 5 101 Col Phantom
U 180 4 D Q 22 10 1 Sq/3 Dragoon
U 180 4 D Q 22 10 2 Sq/3 Dragoon
U 180 4 D Q 22 10 3 Sq/3 Dragoon
U 171 4 D Q 22 10 1 Sq/4 Dragoon
U 171 4 D Q 22 10 2 Sq/4 Dragoon
U 171 4 D Q 22 10 3 Sq/4 Dragoon
End

So if you play:

#09h_1_Zehdenick.scn
or
#15_05h_1_Jena-Auerstedt.scn

or any of the variations of such you will have dragoons that can mount/dismount.

But I havent coded the dragoons for the rest of the game as I didnt see it as something that we really need for now.

Remember, if you change the OB files to first make a copy of them. Then just make a copy of the .scn file and change the name of the .oob file to correspond to the one you created.

My next title makes more use of dragoon types. And should I get the time I might decide to code the Jena OBs as well but as Paco said we discussed it and frankly didnt see it as something we wanted to do.

Why? Because the French cavalry mainly DIDNT fight dismounted. No, I dont think I am robbing the players as the French have plenty of INFANTRY anyway.

The Prussian cavalry was not known to fight dismounted. It was not the way of the Prussians to dismount their troopers even to hold a village. Perhaps later on during the 1813 campaign but the idea of a Prussian cavalryman fighting on foot was less noble.

The French didnt fight well dismounted.

I remember well that we thought it would become too much of a gamey thing anyway. Thus I allow it in only a few of the scenarios for Jena. For my future title I am also keeping it to a miminum.

If you feel that the players should be able to make up their own minds about it then copy the .oob files and recode them as you like. We dont lock the .oob files for this series and you are free to edit to your heart's content.
