This round of the MOE4 tourney is at an end. Please send in your results. You may then see Helga for a round "on the house" and you may proceed to describe your tales of victory or gallant defeat.

I counted 207 guns at one point to my 70 odd. I calculated looking at the main OOB that he has twice as much cavalfy as me as well, or perhaps even more.

Infantry was a french advantage but this is soon lost due to numerous Russian units spreading fatigue out quicker and there shear weight of numbers.

Add to this

1. that initially the Russian player seems more concentrated and the French player dispersed removing the ability of the French player to have much flexibility in his plan. A numerically inferior force can win if concentrated rapidly. This opportunity was removed by the scenario

2. The flat and open terrain favouring the enormous artillery and cavalry superiority of the Russians

3. The late arrival of some key french forces thus seeding any chance of deployment initiative to the Russians

4. The higher vp points for French casualties - and that is the killer

5. The Russian player seems to have quicker access to the town.

To me this looked like an unwinnable scenario for the French. I would certainly not agree to play it if I knew the forces before the game.

I am on a draw still in move 24 but I am more or less surrounded I have circled the wagons so to speak.

The French command quality is the main advantage they have but it is not enough to offset all the Russian advantages in my view and create a balanced scenario.

Just my opinion.

Has anyone heard from Jim Hall? He is my opponent and had some real life issues to attend to back in June but I haven't heard anything since.

Hmmm. Sounds like shades of the infamous Battle of Taratinova from MOE1. [B)] Anyone remember that one? No French player won that one. [xx(] But we have at least one victorious French army in this one so far. [;)]

That's very generous of you Jim. However the truth is that it was a tough fight and you did well to hold back the Russian horde for so long. The fact that I was able to occupy the town in the first few turns and then advance beyond it before the battle really started meant that I had a big victory point advantage that would have been difficult for you to overcome unless you routed my large army. All I had to do was hold my ground. It was fun to play the Russians with the Jena engine.

I agree that the Russian player had many advantages in this scenario, the main one being that they got to occupy the VP hexes in the town if they were quick. But there is one thing I will say in defence of the scenario. As the Russian player I didn't know if there were a lot more French troops to come or not, or which direction they would come from. For the first third of the game I had a sizeable reserve covering the objective away on my right, and a smaller force screening the approaches on my left. I didn't dare concentrate my whole force, which made for a fairly even fight for a while while I kept guessing. Only when I figured that there wasn't time for the French to outflank me with reinforcements did I throw everything I had at the French in order to keep them away from the town.

There is a crash and bang at the door of the tavern. And in staggers a battered looking light cavalryman. His previously beautiful uniform scarred by the powder of battle. His sword bent and battered.

He goes to the bar....

'Gentlemen a round for General Goodwin a fine officer from the perfidious Albion. It would seem they are not all shop keepers after all. For the first time I have been unable to achieve a victory.'

But with a wry smile he added 'I did scrape through by the skin of my teeth with a draw though!'

With that he opened his pocket applying some of the finest French perfume to lessen the stench of battle and toasted the Tavern.

Salute to General Goodwin.

Now where is that damn Muddy.....

In the corner he could see the famous English FM enjoying his favourite Ale with a sarcastic smile and not a little satisfaction that the over confident pheasant of a Frenchman's wings had been clipped.
