When we use to play table top one thing you tryed to do even with hex squards was try to get on the enemies rear to get that big modifier and the flank as well. I have charge and attack on many games and lost the attack and charge even when the enemy was less in numbers can any one explkaind why the Hp games don't seemto have Flank and rear modifiers????

There are flank and rear modifiers, but I think they get nullified if any unit involved in the attack hits from the front.... Not sure about that last point, though. Play they game without on map results and against yourself with no fog of war and you will see the modifier... Where is my turn :)

Definitely flank and rear modifiers; nasty ones, too. I seem to remember 40% or so from at least some games. Nor do they get cancelled out by other units participating in the melee coming through a front hex. They do get cancelled out however by a single enemy unit facing the attack--even a tiny skirmisher.

Attacking units in the flank in HPS is a good idea there signifigant modifiers for fire, melee and morale.

You need to think of it at two levels though - tactically eg how do I flank this btn and second operationally or grand tactically. That is how do I create a shape in the enemy line to create the opportunity to flank a whole section of the line ensuring lots of tactical flanking occurs.

Trying to bend you enemies battle line out of shape is one of the key templates of Napoleonic warfare in my view. This firstly generates the ability for artillery crossfires and then ultimately melee and small arms.

Also at a defensive level it's a good idea to use skirmishers with formed units to protect their flanks (as Gen Walter mentioned) this is done in the 3d view. You can just reface the skirmisher towards the open flank. This does however only protect you at a tactical level from a melee assautl. Artillery and infantry fire can still be directed into the flank of a unit and receive modifiers.

I recall these are around about 20% for fire and 40% for melee. In the case of the latter using an officer, a unit in column and a flank attack will virtually double your unit strength. So if you manage to stack say 1500 men and you melee assault the flank of a 600 man unit it's not uncommon to inflict some pretty huge casualties such as 250. Especially if you melee assault is also all A class units in the stack.

Ok if you attack a enemy in the rear and you have say 50 men and the enemy has 70 why should a odds of less then 50% win both in good order????Is there some way of checking that the other player didn't set his advanage bar up ????

I am not sure I understand your question exactly Marbot but here goes.

50 Men in column with an officer and A quality (for eg)

+40% for rear attack
+20% for officer
+20% for A quality
+20% for column

So they become 100 men vs 70 (assuming I remembered the modifiers correctly and there was no officer with the defender). Or a 50% superiority.

The HPS engine does not use the old odds system its more sophisticated and one btn can melee one btn succesfully if it gets a 30-50% advantage. Which is better I think.

Further comment the advantage bar can be viewed under AI>set advantage. You cannot change the advantage bar during play by email.
