Day 1 went well with a good group of folks showing up to take part in the first day of Tiller Con 3.

I arrived a tad late (7:45am or thereabouts) to find that our guys had opened the doors and had gotten things underway. Rich Walker and Rich Hamilton were helping folks get oriented (badges, pc internet issue resolution) and the event was in full swing.

I got to finally meet up with several folks that I had typed with for years, they being Gary McClellan, Joe Amoral, Mike Avanzini, Mike Mihalik and others. Gary was gearing up for a game of Midway with Mike Cox. I watched for a bit while he did some preliminary moves in a Wake Island game. Very much interested to try this one out this weekend.

As usual, Ernie Sands and his wife were there. She provided backup (as usual) for the Rich's for the evening dinner that John Tiller provided to his team. Much thanks again to Mrs. Sands for her help!

Ken Miller had created a version of the Murfreesburg battle while was played MP style (2 vs. 2). They were well into turn 13 when around 5pm we had a power outage! It lasted for about an hour. That gave folks a good excuse to take a dinner break.

John Tiller gave a discussion group on future work. No, he did not name future titles, just some concepts of what he would like to do for future work. This was open to all that attended. Several comments on his game ideas were given by participants which John duly noted for future consideration. All of the attendees gathered around. Several of the folks that John contracts with were in attendance and gave some input as well. (I will not elaborate much on this - I will let Rich Hamilton or one of our reps add in any details as they deem fit). John wanted to emphasize that his ideas are for work he is doing and do not in any way speak for what HPS Simulations is planning, John Tiller Software being his own private venture of course. All in all a very open ended discussion that leaves much of us looking forward to seeing what John's creative mind will be bringing us in the future. He emphasized the military's continued interest in wargaming projects and that his work with them has permeated the junior ranks of the US Air Force (for instance: his Modern Air Campaigns is used by a large proportion of the junior officers in the USAF for training purposes). He let us know that the military is showing continued interest in his efforts and that he had just returned from a trip with a prospective customer. Work is out there - he is out trying to broaden his base of military clients.

Gaming included ACW, Naval Campaigns and Panzer Campaigns for the most part with some folks looking over Squad Battles, M&P and many other games in the HPS line of games.

We are right across the hall from the registration desk for Nashcon so we saw alot of their attendees come into take a look at what HPS is all about. The Rich's and others helped them see how the products worked. Several purchased games and in one case I got to help a fellow learn the Squad Battles series (he bought Eagle Strike and the Pacific War titles as well as the Midway game).

It was a good time to talk with each other - Mark Adams, Mike Avanzini and Joe Amoral and I got to discuss artwork for future products for instance.

It was a good starting day for the event. Several folks made short excursions to battlefields (Franklin and Murfreesboro and Nashville) in the area as well as the usual shopping trips by the gals.

And of course there was the usual joking between Ernie and myself (with Mike Cox adding in alot of choice barbs too!).[:D]

Thanks for the update, Bill. It sounds like you're off to a good start. Keep us posted on the games.

Say hello to Mike Cox for me. I haven't forgotten his guided tour -- perhaps he brought a sampler with him. For those of you that don't know --- Mike is the Master Vintner at the Shug Winery in Sonoma, CA.

Mike has been busy playing games - when I saw him tonite he was involved in a Squad Battles game with Gary M. and a Panzer Campaigns with another player. Two fisted Mike![:D]

Today's Air Power Discussion Group went well with Gary Morgan showing off the various capabilities of the series and Glenn's Panzer Campaign series talk going well as well.

Rich Walker's ACW group (I attended this one) dealt with comments on the artillery recrew procedure as well as several other topics. Lots of good ideas all around.

Plenty of gaming today - a 3 player ACW battle of Murfreesboro saw the Yanks toss in the towel (Minor Defeat for them). A 3 on 3 game of a Gettysburg scenario that Ken Miller had put together was still on going when I left for the evening.

Historicon had a table Lost Battalions Games who have put out an updated version of Napoleon's Battles (old AH miniature rules). They also are putting out new scenario sets too.

Another one of their tables featured a diorama of the game Turning Point Stalingrad - a really well done job and it looked like a great way to play the old game. The counters were on a base behind a miniature (armor or infantry). The old AH game put to a new dimension!

Its been a good con and Rich is already discussing the possibility of a repeat with Historicon at a later date. We have a nice conference room and plenty of workstations.

Kudos to the Rich's (and helpers) for putting on a great event. Tomorrow is the last day (done at 4pm). Its been great to see all of the guys (again or for the first time).

Hey Sir Muddy. Hope you are well. I did manage to bootleg some wines in to the Great State of Tennessee. John T is now a fan.... Next time I ask for an engine change in SB, I'll be sure to ply him with a few bottles of pinot...

After chatting with Marechal Corbin, I am plotting my triumphant return to fighting form....

Yes, it was GREAT to finally meet up with John Corbin. John has real vision issues and when I met him I was reminded of his need for nice clear graphics! Good to see you John! Hope we can meet up again at a future TC!

Mike and I had met before but it was nice to see his new perm! [:D] Not sure if you are running a disco along with the vineyard ... [:p]

Anyway, good to see Mike and John. The real surprise was Jeff Mathes - a great guy and we enjoyed a short instructional game of REN together as well as "grazing" at the local "all you can eat and man are the patrons large" restaurant (Golden Corral its called - you get the idea).

Moo![:D]

Gotta tell ya that I had the best time with you guys and Tiller Con 3.

Meeting people that you have only ever "talked" to via email is fantastic.

I played my first LAN game and loved it. If it wee possible, I would play this way all the time.

Gary and Mike got me hooked on the naval campaigns series so I will wonder over to that club soon.

My heartiest thanks to all who made this a success and I am already counting the days till the next one.

John - I know that the Naval Campaigns Club went dormant some time ago. Is there another club going or has the club been revived?

I hadn't heard about such a club so it would be nice to see one for Midway. I like the way that ships are allocated for Midway. You would command carrier(s) and their escorts.

Much better method than the WW1 games where I was given 4 groups of 5 torpedo boats to try and handle in the online MP games while the other guys (each) had a line of cruisers to maneuver.
