Who would have expected L'Gaurd to 'Recule! from some surprised close ranch flank volleys as well? But it did happen, just as who would have expected a horde of loin cloth wearing spear thrusters to annihilate a whole battalion of well trained, breach loading armed British infantry in 1879!

Yes. Either we want to games infinitely more complex, or we'll accept that the set of unlikely circumstances or the odd chance is represented by an unlucky dice roll.
(As an aside, in game terms those guys in Isandlwana were disordered (surprised in camp), out of command (Chelmsford had ridden away into the middle of nowhere to chase ghosts), had a couple of rather E quality leaders, forgotten to deploy skirmishers, and then became surrounded by about 20 times their number and went low on ammo. Obviously they then ended up routed/isolated and were captured and removed from the map. It's a miracle that in reality some got away! [:p])
