Mr. Dunnigan wrote that quite a bit ago from what I remember. Its dated and there is probably one out there that is better but its a good beginning.

I got to hear him speak at a local state college in Los Angeles when I was a teenager. Of course he had is own view on the hobby but really had a very realistic outlook on it as well.

For the hobby there are other books out there too but I have not read them. You could try:

Wargaming for Leaders:

Wargaming: An Introduction:

http://www.amazon.com/Wargaming-Introdu ... 269&sr=8-4

The Art of Wargaming: A Guide for Professionals and Hobbyists:

http://www.amazon.com/Art-Wargaming-Gui ... 269&sr=8-7

Ancient & Medieval Wargaming (its not about Napoleonic wargaming at all of course but should be interesting):

I have owned Campaigns of Napoleon by Chandler since I was 17.

I do not own any of the other books I referenced. Just thought I might give you a list of books you could look into. They were all on wargaming either as a hobby or as a tool for staff colleges or historians.

I've owned a copy for at least a decade but never got around to reading it yet (I have read Chandler's On the Napoleonic Wars).

On armchairgeneral the majority opinion is that Chandler was wrong about many details of battles and campaigns which then became the accepted gospel, but it is still an indispensible classic in the field.

Chandler's Campaigns of Napoleon is the basic primer for all Napoleonic history. I can't think of a better book to get folks to read to better understand the period.

While his numbers for the battles are now dated its still the best on giving an overall account of all of his campaigns.
