Thanks for your comments guys!

Ok, the gloves are off once again against Michael Fredel. This time, we have agree to an Operational Leipzig Campaign style!

Looking forward to this match...

Have fun Tim, I think I will see if I can invest in a tissue manufacturing company in Barbados...You will be their best customer by turn 80!

Salute!

I have found that as the French side in the Leipzig/Bautzen titles because of the superiority of the Allied armies in artillery and cavalry (historical for sure), the French must make every use of obstructed terrain to counter the opposing cavalry, and also use of reverse slopes to shield themselves from the enemy artillery range of fire.

If one does not pay attention to these vital tactical details, as Christian said so eloquently, the crystal sword will shatter - indeed.

PS - I want in on that tissue manufacturing company as well!

Regards,

Operational Leipzig Campaign style is an excellent choice of scenarios. A lot of strategic possibilities and you don't know the initial dispositions of your opponent. It's a lot more balanced than the campaign tree games.

Todd. Welcome to my world!
In many Leipzig/Bautzen scenarios the French are forced to attack though.

From David Chandler's Campaigns of Napoleon:"Make war offensively; it is the sole means to become a great captain and to fathom the secrets of the art." The soldier who sits in his position and waits for his adversary to attack is more than half-beaten before the first shots are exchanged. However, the need to be aggressive should not be allowed to sink to the level of foolhardiness and mere attacking for attacking's sake: the requirements of security have also to be considered. Napoleon's ideal combination oft these two apparently conflicting factors was "a well-reasoned and circumspect defensive followed by a rapid and audacious attack" - that is to say, he preferred to attack from a strong position or "center of operations," with the knowledge that his communications were secure after allowing just sufficient time to elapse for the enemy to reveal his broad intentions, and at the same time the errors of his dispositions and calculations.

I am also a student  of Clausewitz's emphasis on the 'defensive battle' as the means to gain a major victory, or as he puts it - as likely or even greater an opportunity to do so than the otherwise normally accepted means of an 'offensive battle'.

The last part of Chandler's description above: allowing just sufficient time to elapse for the enemy to reveal his broad intentions, and at the same time the errors of his dispositions and calculations, applies to Clausewitz as well, I feel.

Regards,
