A red coated Hanoverian Colonel enters the tavern closely followed by a young Ensign of the Cumberland Hussars. The Ensign removes his shako as he enters the tavern, tucking it neatly into the crook of his arm. His green dolman is resplendent with fanciful braid, and he carries himself with a confidence that is quite commonplace for the German soldiers in service to the King.

The Commander of the Hanoverian Brigade walks up to the bar, picks up a spoon, and gently taps a glass until he has the attention of the assembled officers.

“Gentlemen Officers of all armies,” says the Colonel, “if I may have your attention for a moment. I would like to introduce you to the newest officer in our fine brigade. Ensign Mac Moore will be taking responsible charge of our cavalry contingent as our venerable General Dobson has retired from the service. There is no doubt that the young Ensign has some rather large shoes to fill, but I have every confidence that he is up to the task. In the finest tradition of the Rhine Tavern, the bar is now open! Ensign Moore is buying!! And when you thirsty buggers drink him to the poorhouse, I suppose our brigade will pick up the remainder of his tab. The level of debt he has accumulated will be the deciding factor on the relative risk of the first mission to which he is assigned.”

"Here! Here!" exclaims an officer of the French Light Infantry, looking perfectly dashing in his field green jacket. "I will have a fine bottle of wine for any and all to share with, on the ensign's farthing."
The officer pauses to look more closely at the two gentlemen of the Hanoverian Brigade.
"I'm wondering, did I not see you skulking about the environs of Parchim the other day? I cannot be so sure, your uniforms do look a lot similar, one to the other."
The Lieutenant accepts the proffered bottle, pours himself a glass, and takes a sip. "Ah, excellent vintage."
Then continues by adding, "The good Colonel I do recognize, as my voltigeurs did report his presence near the German village."
The Lieutenant raises his glass, "To your health gentlemen."

"I am rather hard to miss in this conspicuous, red coat," replies the Hanoverian Colonel with a sigh. "All part of being in command so I am told, although I often miss the concealing colors of my Jager green coat. In any case, I am told that you poor French marksmen need all the help you can get to hit your target."

"No, my dear Lieutenant, I am afraid you have mistaken Ensign Moore for the Commander of our vaunted Field Jagers, Ensign Peccolo. I am sure he will be along in short order now. We Hanoverians are not much on missing parties you understand. Ensign Peccolo was no doubt delayed gathering information on your troop movements and dispostions around Parchim."

The Lieutenant pours himself another glass of the fine cheery wine, and fills several others upon the table, gesturing for any of those gathered about to help themselves.
"Col. sir," he addresses the Hanoverian Brigade commander, "we may be poor marksmen ('though this belies the reputation our skirmishers seem to enjoy around the campfires of Coalition armies), but we need not be such long range sharpshooters," he pauses to sip from his glass before continuing, "as we learned during the Revolutionary Wars in your former colonies," the Lieutenant emphasizes the word 'former', "to use the cover of every tree, rock, and hedge to sneak close upon you, and pow!" the Lieutenant grins broadly.

The Hanoverian Hussar stands and pours a tall shot of Jager for each of the assembled officers of the Hanoverian Brigade. The Hussar moves to the center of the tavern and raises his glass.

“I am Ensign Mac Moore of the glorious Hanoverian Brigade. Gentlemen, I will be buying drinks tonight courtesy of the advance of pay that the good Colonel Jones has seen fit to give me for this occasion. Fellow officers of the Coalition and my honorable French adversaries, I raise my glass and salute you all.”

The Hussar quickly downs the shot of Jager and breathes deeply to cool the heat now coating his throat.

“Colonel Jones has shared stories of past visits to the tavern with his new officers and I would ask that our French adversaries keep the debauchery to a minimum. I will happily buy your drinks but I’m not purchasing any livestock for “amusements”. Enough said mon amis?”

The Hussar walks over to the table of French Light Infantry Officers and picks up the bottle of wine at the table. He nods to each officer and pours a full glass of wine for each of them.

“Lieutenant Schmidgall, we have not yet had the pleasure of meeting. Perhaps we will come across one another on the field of battle in the future. Most Frenchmen do not look forward to a Hanoverian Hussar bearing down on them with his sword drawn but I digress.“

The Hussar stands and walks briskly to the table of Hanoverians. The Hanoverian Colonel hands the Hussar another tall shot of Jager as he reaches the table. The Hussar nods to his Colonel and raises the glass high.

“Raise your glasses and let me offer a toast. To the Hanoverian Brigade, the finest Brigade in the glorious Anglo-Allied Army.”

The Lieutenant raises the glass newly filled for him by the Hussar, and acknowledges him.
"Indeed, we may meet some day, ensign, and you may well see what a Tirailluer de Dragon can do when the foe comes charging with sabre waving." He gestures to his fellow officers, who all raise their glasses and speak as one with the Lieutenant, "To the Hanoverian Brigade, the finest brigade in the Anglo-Allied Army!"

The door to the tavern is loudly thrown open... and in walks the pride of the Hanoverian infantry, Ensign Peccolo, covered with soot and soil, fresh from the battlefield. "Was is das? You haf started the party without me? My, my my... It is much to quiet here, We need more song, but first, Helga a tankard please!"

With a twinkle in her eye, she delivers a frothing tankard to the Ensign, who lifts it high towards Ensign Moore. "To you, who many may look upon as Kind, but they shall soon quake in their boots when your soldiers approach!"

With that, he drains the tankard, and burst into song, "Vor der Kaserne, vor dem grossen Tor...."

Welkomen!

Hey, another Hanoverian (not Bavarian) officer!

Such fine fellows. And friendly too.

Glad to have you with us, Mac! Hope you get your knife back soon!

" Oh, the shark, babe, has such teeth, dear

And it shows them pearly white

Just a jackknife has old MacHeath, babe

And he keeps it … ah … out of sight."

Ah, it's been an excellent crop of Hanoverian Ensigns this year. Must be the excellent fertilizer and all that hot air emanating from their Colonel.

Welome to Army Ensign Moore.

I am getting tired of all the insults thrown out about the Emperor Napoleon, the only thing the man ever did wrong was to take power in France from a bunch of nut cases and made himself Emperor. He was not much different from the rest of the European rulers and in my opinion the aristocracy (old boys club) could not have an upstart in their elite ranks and wanted Napoleon gone and Louis running a castrated France. And finally it took them a long time to get rid of him because Roaches are hard to kill!

OH! Welcome to the club Mac and I already know you are a tough one in battle, So Battle On!

The Hanoverian Commander chuckles at the comment of his venerable Field Marshall. Taking another shot of Jager to help him overcome his natural shyness and timid ways, he joins in the singing with his men…

"…Bestaubt sind die Gesichter, doch froh ist unser Sinn, Ja, unser Sinn…."

(…Dusty are our faces, but joyful are our minds, yes, our minds….) :P :P :P

Good to see that Capitaine Kling and I finally agree on something......Nappy B is definitely a roach!

Ah yes, the ancien regimes were very particular about who they let in their club (understandably with all the inbreeding going on). The Haplessburgs got their start as robber barons, and parlayed that into an empire of enslaved cultures, on and on ad nauseum. But as history is written by the winners...
Drinks?
