A Hero’s story Part 1
The year is 1805 Chief d’ escadron Isadore Joseph Remy –Exelmans is sent to the advance guard as it was used by Murat to masked the Grande approach to the Danude. He was with the first squadron that reach the river at Donauworth on 6 Oct. An event that tore aside the curtain to reveal Napoleon ‘s armee astride the river between the Austrian’s army and Vienna. On 8 Oct Exelman’s name shot to the fore when during the first serious encounter of the campaign at Wertingen he won a reputation for bravery that bordered on recklessness. In the early hours at the head of a squadron of dragoons he encountered several hundred Austrian infantry and cavalry guarding Hohenreichen . The village lay in the Army’s path. Annoyed by the sporadic fire from the buildings, he dimounted his two hundred Dragoons and led them musket in hand into the village.
