Hi David,

Are the games you each are using new or old to you? In other words, is this the first time to use the games in question for one or both of you?

And does the answer change when considering having added the most recent update?

The reason I ask is this would narrow down possible issues, such as with one or the other of you.
Also, in the recent HPS Waterloo update, there were some players who experienced the same kind of issue that you are describing (on their end only, not with both players to my knowledge), and it turned out that sometimes the update would not follow the correct path on the install, and HPS ended up putting up a post on the problem, and how to fix it. This worked for a friend of mine.

You may want to explore that issue/fix.

Regards,

David, I assume that you have started all over, and are not trying to recover the same file with which you previously had problems. A habit of deleting the pbem.xxx and pbem.yyy files will only help to prevent your problem with new games, it will not solve your problem with your existing game. Once the file is corrupted, it is rarely recoverable regardless of what you do.

If compressing files works for you, I say go for it.

Well, that's the part that has me totally in a hole.. we did restart the game, fresh, with the needed files deleted. I don't doubt the necessity of deleting those files, but it doesn't seem to be a fix for our problem.

I assume v2.01 is the the latest. I poked around the Matrix site and found a patch that was related to sound crashes, but it said that it only updated the BG series to v1.01.

I'm just at a loss... Ahhh well, like you said, people generally prefer the HPS series games anyway! I still like the BG series, but this is just getting insane

I will ask my esteemed opponent to see if we can go back and start the game from the 1st turn (we are only in the 2nd from the restart) and make it a habit of each of us to .zip AND delete the pbemail.xxx & .yyy files. If it doesn't work this time, I'll have to throw in the towel on this one...

Thank you all for your input!

Regards,

Just waiting to see if zipping works.

We both have V 2.01 - I havechecked for updates when I installed in - December 2012!

Only problem I had in my training game was when I had forgot to save the new file, tried playing the old one (what I had sent) and putting in my password without reading the bit that said enter french password (I was allied). I don't believe David is doing that.

Both of us have broadband not dial up.

Wonder if the transatlantic connection could be a problem for non zipped files. There must be a huge amount of traffic which could cause problems?

FM Moss was my Trainer and long time MP partner after I graduated from the RMA. He and I exchanged unzipped files across the Transatlantic cable daily without any issues whatsoever. Of course, things may have changed. In my experience, I have never found compressing files to be necessary, but it may work in your case for some reason. Hope it does actually.

I hate to report, but still no dice :(

Mr. Barrett zipped the file up, and i was doubly sure that those pbemail.xxx and .yyy files were gone... yet still, "error reading replay file"

quite depressing really, I was enjoying that game!

Just for clarity: I am going to "help" > "about" > "Napoleon in Russia, version 2.01"

Do you know if anyone has had issue with this scenario in the past? it's No. 16 Raevskii's Redoubt

HOLD THE PRESSES!!! I Believe I have a solution!!!

Mr. Barrett mentioned in his last email that he was placing the files in the BD (Borodino) directory of the game. I was using the GR (Great Redoubt) directory. The scenario we are playing is for the the Great Redoubt map, and I just tested it, you can open GR scenario save files on the Borodino battlefield, and all the troops will be in the proper places, just not in relation to the map.

That is to say, the men will be at the right coordinates as if they were standing on the correct map (GR) BUT will instead have been transported to the Borodino battlefield

SO. I believe that if my colleague would be so patient as to go back, ONE LAST TIME, and use the savegame I sent him, this time placing it in the GR directory, then taking his turn, the problem should be solved.

sorry for the double post!
