Bill,
Please do not think that I post what I know about Les Grognards for just your benefit. It is painfully obvious what your feelings are about Les Grognards as you have so eloquently expressed them (over and over again) each time I have answered a club member's query.

There is no hype from me. I bring honest information and places were people can find the information for themselves --as a service to the members our club. Not everyone knows about this game and folks are discovering it all of the time. I also do it to fulfill a promise that I have made to all of them. [:)]

Cheers,
[:)]

Rick,

Can I play it by PBEM? I know this sounds nutty but I don't have lot's of time to fight these battles, even at 10X a 10 hour battle will take an hour (and probably degenerate into clickfest). I don't have time to refight Borodino in real time, let alone slower if I have to puase all the time. I can currently turn a movement phase of BG:Historical Quatra Bras in under 15 minutes (from opening an email to hitting send with the reply). The only time I have ever slowed down was during he MOE III tourney.

So how will it play in PBEM? I know many will play face-to-face or over a modem, but how about us dinosaurs?

Doug,
Yes, you will be able to play Les Grognards in PBEM. It will work exactly like Combat Mission does. Essentially, after setting up at the beginning of the scenario, you plot your unit's actions and send the gamefile to your opponent. He plots his unit's actions and sends the gamefile back to you and then you get to watch what happens as both armies move. Send it back to your opponent and he then watches and plots the next turn, I believe. Repeat the process.

Anyways, PBEM will work like that.

Where units contact each other, fighting may develope. PBEM turns are 15 minutes of game time, I believe.

No more of fishing for the best combat results and no more reloading the gamefile after checking out where your all of your opponent's units are located.

Just like it was back then, you get to be stuck with results that come from the decisions that you make on the battlefield.

Face to face and over the internet play will be like playing the AI. The game clock moves as fast as your clock on the wall does. Until you speed the game clock up some, that is.

Cheers,
Rick

Rick,
Please be careful, your statements about replaying turns and the like make it sound like you think that cheating in the HPS games is endemic, and even standard. I'm sure that's not what you meant, but the NWC is a game club built on trust, with a great number of very honorable players, and I'd hate to see people take that as an accusation of cheating.

Not only that, but all the snide remarks over several posts does get old. If you want to push the game, simply give the web addresses and let GAMERS decide whether or not they want to get the game or not.

Then there are remarks that show that this individual doesn't really KNOW the game.
"Send it back to your opponent and he then watches and plots the next turn, I believe."

So, quit the advertisements and let the websites stand on their own for information that is from the SOURCE. IMO.[B)]

Wrong Rick. Wrong. I am not opposed to this company at all. WE (meaning gamers in general of which I constitute part of that group) have a right to be skeptical about the game. Apparently (seeing that Ernie and Gary have chimed in) that I am not the ONLY one that believes that you are firing off alot of info that cant be backed up YET. Pre-hype is just that. Hype. When the car, er, game, comes out we will test drive and I would be the first to give it a great rating if in fact its good. If not then I will probably pass on buying the game.

So dont try and back me into some corner (HPS vs. Les Grognards). I am for the HOBBY as a whole. My services are available to ANY company that demonstrates a capable attitude to putting games together. I am not locked into working for HPS exclusively. And apparently neither was John Tiller (re: update of BG games for Matrix).

So much for trying to weasel out of this one. We have all been listening to the hype and frankly as others have said .... its getting old. I like the screenshots but remember other games that looked great but didnt measure up.

I SINCERELY HOPE THAT THIS GAMES DOES MEASURE UP.

If you say that I am lying about that statement then you can take a flying leap.

Whatever you say Bill.

To all,

Why am I so excited about Les Grognards? Why am I bringing it to you as though I am being paid to bring it you?

Well, I can assure you that its not to have a duel here with anyone. I only wish to speak about the game and what I know about it.

We are, after all is said and done, the Napoleonic Wargaming Club.

I have absolutely no financial tie to any gaming company. I simply love the tactical level of Napoleonic gaming. It is my passion. Well actually, it is one of them. [:)]

Except for Combat Mission, after 30+ years of wargaming, Napoleonics is pretty much all I wargame any longer.

I am pumped up about Les Grognards because it is nearly what I have always wanted in a Napoleonic computer wargame. It isn't perfect, but hey, it is "still in the womb", so to speak.

I have very closely followed this game for four years now. I have seen it go through many changes and I have learned much about it. When it arrives (sometime this year), I am expecting it to bring us the closest we will have ever come to the tactical level -with very strong ties to realism and historical-ness.

The developer of this game is an ardent fan of Napoleonics and his efforts are single-minded. They are truly a labor of love.

In terms of our hobby, being taken to such a level is unique, IMO.

I am very excited about Les Grognards. To be frank, I can't find a reason why anyone wouldn't be excited.

Many of you have been gracious enough to let me know that you feel the same. I thank you for that.

When Battlefront.com has more NEWS about Les Grognards, I will be back.

Cheers and only the very best to you,
Rick

Well I for one appreciate both Rick's passion and enthusiasm for the Napoleonic games and period (as I share it [:D])and Bill's justifiable comments and questions on the reality of gamers expectations v the final product. I too am a bit cynical having seen the "pretenders" that have come out since John Tiller's BG series and the HPS efforts.

I truely appreciate the people who develop and throw their input into these endeavours and wish them every success as that relates directly to our pleasure and enjoyment.

When we see the passion that drives people and we can join it with the experienced practical realist we can get a balance that can produce the best. So don't stop, either of you, with a good leader you'd both probably produce a great product [:)]

Vive l'Napoleonics!!
