That's also true. Every once in a while, the most unlikely thing will happen.

Once at BG Antietam I was playing the Rebs and it was pretty late in the day, meaning my units were basically all much reduced and in the red fatigue. I had those two "regiments" sitting in a hollow somewhere west of West Woods. They were 50 and 75 men, respectively and they already had fatigue 8 or 9. Not combat worthy by any standard. They were meleed by nearly a full fresh Yankee brigade. When I saw this during the replay, I naturally assumed they would simply vanish under the wave of Union blue. Far from it. Not only did they repell the charge, they also inflicted more casualties than they took. I believe they bost lost 25 men, the Federals lost 75 or 100 combined. I nearly fell off my chair at this point in the replay. And then they also both undisrupted. And next turn, the whole Yankee brigade routed.

What are the odds? But as I said, every once in a while the impossible will still occur. [:)]

Indeed I agree General Walter - it actually mirrors real combat in that sense. Often created by some freak circumstance.

Michael Wittman in Normandy leaps to mind. A couple of Tigers and MKIV's and a whole armoured division defeated. Well the appearance of that anyway. When you delve into it you see the unique circumstances.

What about Murat seizing the bridge in The Napoleonic wars leading some grenadiers across and tricking the Austrians.

Or Perhaps in Waterloo 2 old gd btns pushing a whole corp back at the Plancenoit. Or the 1btn of KGL holding out at the La Haye saint for most of the day. Depsite brigades being thrown against them. They were only defeated when they ran out of ammo I recall.

Or perhaps Rorkes drift.....etc
The list is long I am sure others can add many more examples.

In the fog of war weird things can happen and its mirrored in the games which I think is realistic.

Regards to all

MMMMMMMMMMMMMM, Oui Mon ami once about 1990 at my first table top game I had command of a Dragon Regt. Setting across from me was one of the old editor’s of the Baltimore News American, well he had a Austrian Batt that didn’t close up with the rest of the Austrian line. Well the second rank had no Art in it because of the regt system. Any way when the French turn came, my boys Charged home at a 30degree angle now I was setting on the flank of the entire Austrian Army. They went one after the other like dominoes. The game started at 6pm ended at 7:30pm. After that they the Austrian were red mad! We the French drank like the 4th of July. I never won another game for ten years after that nor was I ever again a Cheval commander.

Or HMS Hood blowing up after a very short fire exchange in the battle off Iceland because one of the shells from Bismarck hit at that freak one-in-a-million angle that would penetrate the turret right to the ammunition chamber--an occurrence the chances for which were considered so remote that the Admiralty had not seen it as justifying the expenses for a little additional armour to protect their largest capital ship against it.
But Scott the glorious legions of France had more attractive uniforms and nice perfume so surely they were superior.[:D]

That said I agree with your comments on the Prussian army of 1813 they were quite a formidable opponent for the French by then. They were fired up by emerging german nationalism as indeed you are as well!

Ah yes it is the nationalism and black uniforms that would scare Boney on the sunset slopes of Waterloo and cause his defeat!! [:D]
Clifton,

Also, keep in mind that the games are not historical on the battalion/battery/squadron level. They were not meant to be. You get the real effects at the Brigade/division/corp levels. It doesn't matter if one Landwher gets lucky and slows up an Old Guard battalion(who probably spent to much time laughing at the Prussian "uniforms" or trying to find a way to attack that wasn't downwind, but I digress...). Look at it over the hour of fighting - did the Old Guard Division dispose of the Prussian peasents?

One pleasent way to accomplish a game is too write a monologue like Nafziger or Chandler. At the end of each hour summerize the events of that hour by Division/Corp. Like,"After spending an inordinate amount of time cleaning their shakos the French Old Guard Division swept away the smelly Prussians to their front and gained the hill. From that point I Corp pivoted off there steadfast iron will to sweep into the Prussia rear and take the day.."

Your next game, try this and have your opponent do it also and compare. But you can't mention anything smaller than a brigade unless something spectacular happened. Example, "The Old Guard 1/1 battalion held off 5,000 poorly clad Prussians." Well that would be expected but you get the drift.

Have fun

See how you laugh now...but sadly in the end we will win and the sun will set on French greatness and on those plains of Belgium would rise the new great power of the next 150 years Prussia!! [:D][:D]

Again those uniforms would scare Boney...with their screaming deathheads...sabres...and almost Beserker like leader!! [:D][:p]
Mon ami that is so very true Scott, I was caught up in the moment by the glamour of the movies which has the Old guard as a mighty man with wonderful uniforms and large bear skin caps to make them taller then their 5’9’’.I also forgot to soften the enemy up first before advancing pardon moi! I will endeavor to write after battle reports that should be most interesting.
