I wish Barrett was still around. Great player and a great sense of humour.

Ah yes many of us folks who've been around, fell victim to his "infamous" Waterloo tactics.... :D I recall being a helpless low ranking officer & he cleaned my clock in 7 turns I think....not that it is hard to do that anyway to me...

Honorable Officers of the NWC:

As the 2011 SON Tournament approaches the last battle, it will soon be time for me to turn my serious attention to the start of the 2012 event as promised. We are trying to work out the final structure at this time and are considering having a category for individual combat that will include Guard, Junior Officer and General Membership matches, as well as a second category for MP play. The MP category will consist of two man teams and will involve only a single battle that will be scored as a contest between the French and Coalition Armies for battle honors (and bragging rights). All games will be based on the Leipzig system as promised.

I welcome any final comments you may have on this matter. We need to conclude the final tournament format in this coming week so that the design team can finish their preparations. I personally learned a lot from the management of the 2011 SON Tournament, my very first, that I intend to use to improve the 2012 tournament experience. We have many new members that have volunteered to help with the upcoming tournament.

Anyone interested in playing in the 2012 Tournament should send an email of interest to me at mark(dot)jones(at)neel-schaffer(dot)com. Please also copy Todd Schmidgall (whose email address I do not have before me) and state the categories in which you would like to participate. Remember that you can play for individual glory, the glory of your army, or (probably) both. If you elect to sign up for the individual combat, please specify the category (Guard, Junior Officer, or General Membership) in which you would like to compete. You must be a member of your armies Guard to participate in the Guard's division and Junior officers cannot carry any rank higher than a Major.

Looking forward to your replies, gentlemen. This should be fun! :P :P :P

(Cripes, we've got a lot of work to do in the next month! :o  :? )

Mark

Congratulations on organizing a very challenging SON1 tournament. For me, your stated goal of meeting NWC members was a real bonus. Not only did I get an opportunity to make 6 new friends from all over the world, I had a most enjoyable set of four matches. Indeed my partner for the last 3 matches and I have gone on to successfully start a Four Monarchs Austerlitz scenario with another 2 new French opponents. Thanks again for your vision and leadership in organizing the SON1 tournament. The NWC is much richer for the experience.

I am definitely interested in participating in the next tournament. Bill

By the way I should have blown the bridge and set on my side of the river till Bill told me that the winner is by points so in the swamps I went. Till he told me that it's by points so out I came and guess what there were these woman waiting for us so like any swamp rat we came running till we saw that they were Highlanders, and my garcons just gave up. The French Dragoons acted like spoiled brats to the Brit Dragoons and the rest is history. Well I don't feel bad because four more French officers met the same same thing all but his very High Highness the unbeatable Marshal of France I forgot his name?  8)

Colonel Dumas, the man to whom you refer as the "Unbeatable Marechal of France" is none other than Marechal Bardon, Commanding Officer of the Vieille Garde.

Officers, salute!

In the matter of the 2012 Tournament discussed by Mark Jones: solo matches involving Guard, Junior Officers , and General Membership are being considered, as well as a single round of MP, with two officers per team.

If interested please send your courier to the headquarters of the Brigadier - mark(dot)jones(at)neel-schaffer(dot)com - and mine as well - tlorens(at)hotmail(dot)com -

Your message should include: name, rank, unit ID, and what category of engagement you wish to participate in.
Regards,

The single player portion of the tournament will consist of a number of elimination rounds until only one, definite winner emerges for each of the three categories. The total number of rounds that need to be played to reach this conclusion may vary by individual category as it is dependent on the number of players participating. As an example, if you have eight players in a category, you would play four matches in Round 1, two matches in Round 2, and a final, single match in Round 3 to determine the winner in that category. If you have sixteen players, you would have to play 4 Rounds to complete the tournament. Thirty-two players would require 5 Rounds, etc. Since the officers will be divided into three categories from the outset, the number of players in each category should be less, so that fewer rounds will be required to complete the 2012 Tournament than were required for the 2011 Tournament. In addition, all scenarios used in this tournament will be small, custom designed affairs of only 12 to 16 turns in length. This will allow a round to be completed in roughly 30 days. The fact that these are one on one competitions will also reduce the time necessary to complete each round as there are fewer overall file exchanges than in a MP game. All of these single matches will be played ‘blind’, meaning that neither player will be able to study the custom scenario before the match begins. It will be up to the players to properly scout their opponent’s position as they move to contact.

As Todd has stated, the MP category of the tournament will consist of a single, medium sized engagement of about 50 turns in length. The selected battle will be a stock scenario from the Leipzig game, as such the players will have the ability to study the initial disposition of their opponent’s forces should they so choose. The battle will be played two on two with French officers on one side and Coalition officers on the other. The battle will be scored in some manner based on the Level of Victory and (possibly) casualties inflicted on your opponent. The scores from all games will be added together to determine the overall score for the armies. The side, either French or Coalition, that scores the most points will be declared the winner and gain ‘Army Bragging Rights’ until subsequently bested in the next club sanctioned tournament.

Officers may participate in both the Single and MP Categories of the tournament concurrently should they so choose. As half of the officers will be eliminated from the Single Play portion of the tournament after the Round 1 match, this method provides that they could still be enjoying tournament play in the MP portion, and not be stuck waiting for this tournament to end and the next to begin.

Todd and Mark,

Not sure if it is too late, but I am interested in playing in the SON II Tournament. I would be interested in both the solo 1 v 1 match as a Junior Officer and the Multiplayer match as a Junior Officer as well. Thanks  8)

For that scenario, you should get Marco's view to see the other side. After seeing that the Dutch-Belgian divisions were involved, I avoided the British units and basically sent the entire French army at the Dutch militia once they made an appearance.

I have you on the list, Fernando! :P :P :P

My apologies to all. I am running a bit behind my intended schedule to start this tournament, but then looking back, I was behind my intended schedule last year too.

I have to get the 2012 SON Tournament Webpage completed. Once I have it, I will send an email to every officer in the club like I did last year to make sure no one is left out of the announcement. We want everyone to have the opportunity to participate as that is really what a club is all about.
