Gentlemen,

Next up:

We need to know who and what!

"he saw the results, but never heard the battle,
he immortalized the victory, but we always seem to get it wrong"

I will post the answer with all appropriate info..........after we make our guesses!

No guesses?

Here is another hint on what:

He used a new "state of the art" machine for those added effects!

State of art, makes me think it may be an artist, and Goya was deaf (or at least on his way there).

Perhaps Goya is the who and the 3rd of May is the what?

That is a great thought and choice, but not the one we are looking for. I will say you are warm on one of your points!!

And the answer is.................

Ludwig van Beethoven is the who, the what is his work entitled: "Wellingtons Victory"

Beethoven was almost completely deaf when he wrote this piece. He saw the battle from having concerts to benefit the wounded Austrian and Bavarian veterans of the Battle of Hanau and listening to accounts of the actual battle from veterans.

Many people today assume that this piece was written for the victory at Waterloo, but it was written for the victory at the Battle if Vittoria. Beethoven incorperated a new "special effects" machine call the Panharmonicon. The Panharmonicon was a musical instrument invented in 1805 by Johann Nepomuk Mälzel, a contemporary and friend of Beethoven. The Panharmonicon could imitate all instruments and sound effects like gunfire and cannon shots.

Here is a link to a Youtube redition of "Wellingtons Victory" For its time, it was a cutting edge work of art!

Enjoy!

Ah, Beethoven! The greatest of all the classical composers. He truly had no equal. His odd numbered symphonys were his greatest works, Die Eroica being my personal favorite.

Mozart was second, and the rest trailed after. :) :D :P

The caption at CRANSTON FINE ARTS:

"Through the driving rain, Captain Mercer (G, troop Royal Horse Artillery), riding his charger Cossack leads his battery to the ridge of Mount Saint Jean on the eve of the Battle of Waterloo."
