There is a small tool which will allow us to play in direct play mode even if players are in different countries - <b>Hamachi</b>.

<i><b>Hamachi</b> is a zero-configuration virtual private network (VPN) shareware application capable of establishing direct links between computers that are behind NAT firewalls. If you are using Hamachi for your own, non-commercial use, it's <b>100% free.</b></i>

Here are some links:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamachi
https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/download.asp

All you need is to install <b>Hamachi</b>, then you can create a group or create your own. All computers in a group can be accessed as if they are in your local network.

I already create a group for our club, you can join it and play with other group members in direct play mode.
Group Name: <b>NWC1</b>
Password: <b>Borodino1812</b>

Direct play mode is fun. I have played many games this way. The only issue is time zones. Other than that its a fun way to play a short to medium length with small to medium sized forces.

Definitely not viable for a large battle.

So if I well understood: In direct mode all players of one side move simultaneously? And only Army Commander view all these moves and Corps commnaders view only their visible hexes??

Buyer Beware:

You can play the HPS titles in direct mode without using <i>Hamachi</i>. I have played the Naval Titles and SB on line against players in other countries for years.
With all the internet hacking going on I would be a little leary of making direct links between computers over the internet in the method discribed. This is not intended as a slam against any member but just on the state of the INTERNET. <i>Hamachi</i>, from what I have read, is closed source not subject to review. Therefore while it probably performs as stated you do not know what else it's code might be doing. These direct connections can also be used by PC's that have been pirated by hackers to infect machines they connect to without the PC owner ever knowing. Just a friendly word of caution. If it seems to good to be true (and free)it probably isn't.[:)]

Dont know to much about these. But yes phil dos have a point.

you can always get a wireless modam with a built in VPN . this would be like having your own server . and would be able to have many guys join in .. I think you can get these for about £40 pounds right now..

A handy thing to have if you want to play most games online then you dont have to go though those web servers.

My brother has one and i play games online with him alot .

Just use the built-in direct mode play of the HPS games. No need for additional layers.

Plus, Hamachi does/might cause problems. I do not remember where I saw these problems as I was not interested in the program, BUT take a look here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamachi

Read the bottom information.

As has been mentioned, before, the closed source of the program might be problematic.

Plus, there is absolutely no reason to use it for the HPS games.

Don't mean to be a pooper but I must comment here that my own experience with Hamachi was disasterous. I was invited to use it for TCP/IP Combat Mission games. I loaded it and found that it totally stuffed any ability my computer had to participate in TCP/IP games - which I loved. It knocked me off for a couple of months 'til I finally 'cracked it', as we Australians say, and wiped my computer. Perhaps I did something wrong, but I have kept well away from the program since.
