Guys - does anyone know what the settings are for XP in the Windows Firewall control panel that I need to make in order to play our HPS games via the internet?

I know I need to add the program to the list of exceptions but what ports do I need to enable to allow the program to host or be a caller?

Ok - here is another take on the same subject: I have turned off Windows Firewall and am trying to configure my Linksys WRT-54G cable modem router to allow me to host.

I have entered in the following range of ports (both UDP and TCP) to the allowable port settings in the router (numbers from Rich H.):

47624 to 47624
2300 to 2400
6073 to 6073

I still cannot host a game. I get this message:

"Error establishing system as host"

If anyone knows any other settings that have to be tweaked please respond here.

Bill,

In the user's manual is a link to Microsoft that lists the ports required by Direct X for internet play. I've only played this type game on local networks with friends or at cons so I can't give you a list of the ports. You might try Rich Hamilton, I believe he once posted the ports needed for this at one of the forums but I don't have the info and haven't had any luck finding it with a search on the forums.

It's been a long long time since I played online, but I seem to recall that in order to do that with HPS games one or even two small service programs other than the game itself need access through the firewall, but of course I can't remember their name. Would I have to do it again, I probably would just watch the firewall log to see which program constantly requests a connection when trying to join a game, and then allow that program through. That might fix the problem.
