In my next title I am contemplating on how to do the leader faces. Often its impossible to find pictures for all of the leaders.

So ... in this next title I will release would you:

1. Want to see the faces even if its wrong.

2. Want to see no fact rather than one that is incorrect.

For #2 you would see the a graphic that would be a flag for that nation or some generic image (not a face).

See The Renaissance game for an example of how we would do it.

I like the face outline but blacked out so you know that when a face is displayed it is that person.
Or you could get all of us to send in passport pics and you could use them [:D]
Otherwise a flag is fine by me rather than an incorrect face.

I would like to see a face, even it is the wrong one. Maybe a generic face?

I vote for the faces. They are a visual cue, not becuase I recognize all of the faces but I know that when I see a face that unit is a leader....

As long as the face represents someone from the period! So no sneaking in Frederick the Great, of Patton. Heck, you could take a photo of yourself in a puffy white whig, scan it in, give it to Mark for some art touch up, and none of us would be any wiser.. The Hitchock approach...

Thanks guys, we will stick with the current format. More of a visual cue I guess than really checking to see if its accurate.

Mark and I go through the internet and our books trying to find pics for the leaders. In particular the Allies are hard to find.

If you want to help us with the Allies please email me separately. In particular we can always use help with the Russians.

I did find a few of the "name-1, name-2, name-3" Russian leaders - you know, the ones that have the same name but a number after them. Wikipedia had a good article on one of them for the Austerlitz game. I found one picture for one of the three that shared the same name.

Usually I like to change those to use an initial for the name and drop the number. But sometimes I just used the number.

Its a time issue. Just don't have the time always to find everything we need. And I do not know French, German or Russian either. Always good to have guys like Warren Bajan or Tomasz or Dierk's assistance. Warren has been invaluable on our recent team, he reads German and French.

Anyway, thanks for the help! Default it is!

Bill,

in St.Petersburg in the Winter Palace there exists a Military gallery. It consists portraits of approximately 2/3 of Russian generals taking part in the Napoleonic wars. The portraits were created by George Dowe and his students in early 1820s/ This is a link to the web page with list of all the portraits in gallery:
http://www.museum.ru/1812/persons/vgzd/general.html
Clicking on every name will lead to a personal page with large picture in two formats - color and black and white, description of the picture (uniform, awards depicted, etc.) and brief bio. All the names are easily transliterated with Google.

This is a list of all the Russian generals active in late XVIII-early XIX century:
http://www.museum.ru/1812/persons/RUSS/ra_a09.html
Link on every name leads to a web page with brief bio, service history, award etc. In the bottom of the page there is a link to biographic articles. The later often consist small black and white portraits from other sources.

This is the complete list of Russian army regiments, their commanders and Chefs:
http://www.museum.ru/1812/Library/Podmazo/index.html
There exist individual pages for officers, they are the same with the previous database.

To repeat all the names are easily transliterated.

Disclaimer. I have no idea about possibility to use this info/images in a commercial product. In printed works they must be referenced.

Hope it helps a bit.

Anton - a most helpful page ... but I do not read Russian! Is there a way to translate this page?

I will pass this along to Mark. VERY MUCH THANKS if somehow you know of a way to translate it into English. Sorry but all I know about Russian is Das Vadanya and Nyet! [:D]

Oh yes, and that cossacks dance with bears! [8D]

Jim and Ed, look we do want to ATTRACT and KEEP our customer base right! [8D] I wanted to add in my pic but Mark nicely pulled me aside and said, "See kid, you may want to rethink this idea of yours. After all John does have to make a living selling these games to discerning gamers!" I pretty much shelved that idea right away!

I will add though that Joe Amoral sent me some work he did based on our faces (well John's anyway) for the Unit.bmp pics. He sort of morphs them a bit so they are not spitting images.

Ah yes, takes me back to the days of AH Squad Leader when they used the names of their staff for the leader names. Sgt Stahler and Lt. Greenwood immediately come to mind!

Bill,

Or you may just open Google Translate site in another window or tab, then copy the text in question into a proper field. Do not forget to turn your imagination on. The texts may be very strange and funny.

The names are somewhat correctly transliterated. Again you may need some imagination here. For example surname Palen in English is usually spelled as Pahlen. I would spell Akhte instead of Ahte etc. But these are minor corrections.

The list contains only those men who were by 1815 in rank of at least Major General (or corresponding civil rank), who made a major contribution in war with Napoleon and who had an ideally clear dossier. Being under trial for example meant one will not get his portrait in the gallery. There were some politics as well. These questions, although interesting, are not important here. All those who were still alive by the time the portraits were made posed personally. For those killed in action or who died after the war other paintings/engravings were used.
