Whats better to do with your guns. Let them at the top of the stack or a infantry unit?

If your infantry is in line it is essential they are at the top of the stack otherwise they cannot fire but other than that I don't think it really matters.

Perhaps it effects defensive fire though - ie 'who is the target they fire at' but I have not observed that so far.
One thing I have observed is that if you are advancing in column and have a skirmisher in the same stack the defensive fire seems to target the skirmisher so perhaps there is something in the engine on it.

Unless your infantry is in line I don't think it affects the game mechanics. It can be helpful seeing where your guns are but it makes it easier for your opponent as well.

My experience suggests that it is best to have artillery on the top of a stack which facilitates defensive fire. An infantry unit in line formation may fire offensively while underneath an artillery battery. If there are two infantry units in line, the one at the bottom of the stack can only fire when moved to the top of the stack.
