What is the longest surviving royal house in Europe and what was its relationship to France during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars?

The Capetian dynasty is oldest European royal house. King Juan Carlos of Spain and Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg are members of this family, both through the Bourbon branch.

The French Louis XVI and XVIII were descendants as were Charles IV and Ferdinand of Spain.

Interesting. Wikipedia says the House of Savoy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savoy

Installed by Rudolph III, King of Burgundy, officially in 1003, the House of Savoy became the longest surviving royal house in Europe. It ruled the County of Savoy to 1416 and then the Duchy of Savoy from 1416 to 1714. The County and Duchy of Savoy incorporated Turin and other territories in Piedmont, a region in northwestern Italy that borders Savoy, which were also possessions of the House of Savoy. The capital of the Duchy remained at the traditional Savoyard capital of Chambéry until 1563, when it was moved to Turin. In the 18th century, the Duchy of Savoy was linked with the Kingdom of Sardinia. While the heads of the House of Savoy were known as the Kings of Sardinia, Turin remained their capital. The original territory of Savoy was absorbed into France in 1860, as part of the political agreement with Napoleon III that brought about the unification of Italy, but the House of Savoy retained its Italian lands and its heads became the Kings of Italy.

What was the source of your answer? Would be funny if its Wiki!

I thought it would be a French or German house.

From Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_house

And your answer does not include CURRENT monarchs, like Juan Carlos of Spain.

Interestingly, both Capet and Savoy have roots from the King of Burgundy in 1003.

I think its a matter of semantics. Dynasty (Capatian) vs. House (Savoy or for instance Stuart).

But yes, Capatian is the oldest Dynasty in Europe.

If a "house" is something different from a "dynasty", then it's a part of the latter. As in say the House of Valois or of Bourbon as parts of the Capetian dynasty.

It doesn't change the answer however. The Capetian dynasty was founded in the 10th century and still rules in Spain today, which beats a house or dynasty founded in the 11th and deposed in the 20th century (Savoy). Every French king of the past millenium and every Spanish king since 1700 is a direct male descendant of Hugh Capet.

The only way to make Savoy the correct answer would be to count only the French Capetians. Then you have them ruling from 987 to 1848, which is 861 years, or 838 if you subtract the 23 years from 1792 to 1815, whereas the House of Savoy would run from 1003 to 1946, or 943 years. But then of course they were counts and dukes mostly, but kings of Savoy only from 1723 and of Italy only from 1861 to 1946, so as a royal dynasty they have a history of mere 223 years, and as a national dynasty only of 85. Not quite the same as more than eight centuries as kings of a more or less unified country.

Take it up with the Wikipedia author. That is where I got my answer (bows out).
