Ah yes, the 19th of August. An end to the pitiful attempt of Napoleon's to rebuild his shattered army with a bunch of sad soldiers! Along with a group of officers that would rather enjoy their perfume and wine and estates, the Prussians would whip them in three key battles (and one minor one) in a month's time! Grossbeeren, Hagelberg, Dennewitz and the Katzbach!

Ney, Oudinot, MacDonald. Is THAT the best you can throw at us, Corsican?

Our glorious arms triumph over the Ogre and his automatons! Wartenburg! Leipzig! Ah, music to my ears! The cry of our officers urging the men on to victory! It's too much for me! Time for breakfast!

Conveniently leaving out Dresden, aren't you?

Typical Prussian hot air. How are those bounties going gents? I haven't heard a peep from your merry band of schnitzel eaters since that bold pronouncement was made.

Well lets see ....

Grossbeeren - that.s 1
Katzbach - that's 2
Hagelberg - that's 3
Dennewitz - 4
Leipzig - 5

Dresden - 1 French victory.

Hey that works!

We win in the baseball score of 5 to 1 sir!

8) "Hello fans and welcome to Brandenburg Park. It's a lovely day for baseball and here comes our beloved national team, The Big Black Machine. Out trots our starting pitcher, Herr Scharnhorst. The Frenchies put up their first batter, Herr Murat. Don't forget to get your hotdogs folks, the vendors will be around real soon. The Umpire cries, "PLAY BALL" and we are off. Scharnorst goes into the windup. Here's the pitch. ..... Murat swings at the first pitch. von Borstell handles it easily at second and flips over to von Bulow at first. Out #1 ...."

:P

You should hear the catcalls when Herr Ney steps up to the plate! :D

Um, Bill, Leipzig was in October :?

Besides, victory was achieved many times over for the French in the 1813 campaign as the Allies simply ran away to hide when they found out that Napoleon was on the field.

Jeff - open up Digby-Smith's Nap Wars Data Book and read the amount of times that it says "Allied Victory" in the text for all of the 1813 actions (battles and otherwise) for the Autumn campaign (which includes October last time I checked - yes, October can be a Winter month in New England but the traditional feeling is that it is a Fall month).

Honestly, it is not even worth debating. The Allies whipped up on the French so many times it is not even funny. And their strategy of stepping away from a fight with Napoleon was wise. He was THE ONLY French commander in the main theater that could beat them.

In a way Dennewitz was Napoleon's defeat. Why? Because all Ney knew was that Napoleon was on his way north with the VI Corps, some Young Guard and the I Cav Corps. He felt that he was going to be reinforced. Had Napoleon abandoned Dresden and taken out the northern forces (Bernadotte falling back into Swedish Pommerania) there is no doubt that the alliance would have fallen apart with one of their armies (plus Wallmoden) driven into the Baltic.

Leipzig - an overwhelming victory one might think but remember that it was there that the Allies finally decided to fight him. And Napoleon and his commanders blew it - they did not perform adequate reconnaissance towards Halle (Ney and Marmont's mistake) and missed Blucher's entire army. Mockern was the result (often looked at as its own battle - indeed it was).

They should have been able to defeat Schwarzenberg in the south. Blow the bridges in the Halle suburb and head north with the entire army. Deploying Ney to the north of the river was a waste of troops. Delmas (9th Div of III Corps) and the Polish 27th Div were enroute as was the VII Corps but they could have re-routed more to the east if needed in order to allow Napoleon time to smash the Austrian-Russian-Prussians and drive them away. And actually the arrival of the 9th Div/III Corps caused Blucher to halt wondering if it wasn't an army corps.

On the first day of Leipzig, Napoleon had his best chance of winning. And stayed on the limited offensive instead.

III Corps and IV Corps being pulled from the north doomed Ney's wing (mainly under Marmont at that point) to a terrible loss.

It should have been a resounding French success.

Bernadotte would not have shown up to the battle had Blucher been driven off. Or word that Schwarzenberg was retiring. The Allied Coalition of 1813 (fall) was strong only because of a few officers that had the will to win. Blucher, Bulow and a few Russians. Yorck was timid as was Kleist.

But check out Digby-Smith's "The Greenhill Napoleonic Wars Data Book" - not even close my friend.
