To All NWC Members:

One of the members of our club had brought it to the Cabinet's attention that the existing text of Club Rule 5.4, pertaining to the proper scoring of games in which one side either forfeits or abandons a game in progress, was in need of revision. The existing rule currently reads as follows:

Club Rule 5.4 – Game Result Definitions – Abandonment/Forfeiture

Player disappears, for personal reason cannot continue, etc, game is terminated. The number of turns in a game determines when this can be applied:

• If the game has less than 10 turns then the rule is applied up to and including 3 turns played.

• If the game has 10 turns or more then the rule is applied up to and including turns played.

The rule, as it currently stands, specifically omits the number of turns at which a scenario having a full length of 10 turns or more is considered to have been played to a sufficient point to where it can be scored for the records. The Cabinet approved a revision to this rule to better clarify the intention of this rule for our membership as follows:

Club Rule 5.4 – Game Result Definitions – Abandonment/Forfeiture

If the player, or players, of one side disappears, for personal reasons cannot continue, or for any other reason fails to submit a playable turn to their opponent(s) within 30 days, the player, or players, remaining may request that the game be terminated according to this rule as follows:

• If the full game is less than 10 turns in length, and one side abandons the game prior to the start of the third turn, the game is annulled and no points are scored.

• If the full game is 10 turns or greater in length, and one side abandons the game prior to the start of the fifth turn, the game is annulled and no points are scored.

• Any game that is abandoned by one side after the minimum number of turns has been played as outlined above will be considered forfeit, and the players on the remaining side will be awarded a Major Victory for the number of game turns actually played prior to the abandonment.

Although not specifically stated, this rule revision carries the provision that any, and all, games previously registered that may stand in contravention to the revised wording, be accepted as currently registered and are not subject to dispute due to this revision.

The vote taken in the Cabinet was unanimous in favor of the revised wording. As this was considered to be a minor clarification to our existing rules, the Cabinet did not deem this to be of any major impact to the workings of our club and, as such, would not require the vote of our full membership for adoption. The new wording of Club Rule 5.4 will be posted soon by one of our fine webmasters and is considered adopted for club play hereinafter.

Thank you, Paco, for your attention in identifying this oversight so that a proper revision could be put into place for the overall benefit of all members.

Respectfully a Servant of our Membership,

I would change this in the opening statement:

for personal reasons cannot continue

to this:

and for personal reasons cannot continue

I like the addition of the word "and", Bill. I actually had retained the original wording in the beginning of the post so that is simpy a carryover from the original rule.
