A game file came my way tonight which was from the Campaign Leipzig game - Dennewitz Campaign - where one player had taken the main objective area and the defender offered him a Maj. Vic. Term Bid. The French player accepted of course. Game ended at turn 9 of 24.

Now I checked with Mark Jones on this: by pulling off the field of battle in ANY club game you do not suffer a loss. Just the current victory level is assessed.

Ok, this DOES present a problem: if the victory level is say "French Major Defeat" as the game begins and if the Scenario Designer screwed up and didn't assign victory locations on the map whereby the French player could get at least a Draw then why should the First Player lose?

Thus I would say this: if a recon of the scenario determines that this CAN happen then the worst that the First Player would suffer is a DRAW.

Now one club has a rule that says if you exit the map with all of your forces you lose a Minor Defeat. We have no such rule but the players should always use common sense before a game begins and discuss the retreat options in case the Scenario Designer did not come up with a formula for such a case.

For Campaign scenarios I am all for a side leaving the map if they desire. I do think that its sporting to give the other player a Minor Victory but again you could agree beforehand that "in the case of the campaign this force saw the overwhelming forces against them and decided to call it quits."

In the scenario I checked the Allies were going to lose a battery and a battalion which while it would not raise the victory level about a Minor Victory would indicate that he did TRY and defend the objective.

The village was worth 150 VPs. Another 100 VP location was further back from the village to the NE. Had the Allies left the board a Minor Victory was the most that the French could get. I do congratulate the Allied player on being a good sport but in fact for purposes of reality he could have just left turned in a Term Bid of Minor Defeat if he liked.

What I hope does NOT come from this thread is a new rule similar to the ACW club. I think that if players accept a game the burden is on the First Player to submit the question of this issue to his opponent. Leave it to the players to decide how this will work and not some hard and fast rule that may not mirror the situation.

Hoping to keep this a "Player's Club" and not turn it into a rules lawyer shop like the other club has become.

Bill the club rule is if you leave a game after 5 turns regardless of its status its a major victory to your opponent.
Of course on the odd occassion by gents agreement it can be declared a non game but that must be by consensus.

Colin,

That is actually Abandonment/forfeit of a game, when a player doesn't return a turn after 30 days, not by doing what the scenario intends someone to do and exit the battlefield after a certain point.

Oh, I see, more coffee. When I played Colin, he had caffeine oozing out of his ears. He was an absolute whirling dervish of death and destruction. Fortunately, now that he is my multi-player partner, he continues to function in the same fashion.

No, I cannot let him run out of coffee now. I have chartered a small freighter, my fine French friend and adversary. Your coffee should arrive within the week. Bon appetite mon ami! :P  8)
