 Post subject: Battle of Craonne Error

Or it could be called "On the Slippery Slopes of Craonne" if you like.

Mike Bowen deserves credit for finding this error - the Path terrain type MP cost for Artillery and Wagons is set to zero in the PDT file. This was done because I found out that the slopes were muddy and would not support artillery. However, I failed to move certain units in the Craonne scenarios off of the slopes and onto the plateau (as part of the main column).

Rather than go through all of the scenarios and move the units I am going to added in a value to the PDT file that is costly. Normally it is 4 MPs per hex so I will make it 6 MPs per hex instead.

I will find all scenarios that use this PDT file and also search for all occurences where this happens in any other PDT files and correct it for the update.

In the meantime, if anyone wants to play the battle using the corrected value I am going to post UPDATE version scenarios file. It will be a COPY of the scenario with a different PDT file which will use the correct values. The players are free to enter the new game form using the OFFICIAL scenario name. A list will be provided with the TEMP UPDATE.

Once the game is updated again you can toss out the TEMP UPDATE files. Again, there will be a list in my TEMP UPDATE that will tell you which files you can delete.

This is so folks can enjoy the scenario but not overwrite OFFICIAL files.

Official answer on this one: my recollection of my research reveals the PDT files are correct.

What needs to be done for this scenario is to move the artillery units and wagons off of the path and put them onto a Road hex. Then note in the Scenario Description that Paths are off limits for both artillery and wagons.

The condition of the countryside in 1814 was just terrible. Artillery had a terrible time moving and was of little use in many instances. A good example is Montmirail where the Russians just left their guns in the rear for most of the battle. Prior to this battle the Young Guard artillery was bogged down. It took the better part of a division of troops to move the guns forward.

"Mobile Column" is something of a misnomer at times. But they did move faster than the Austrians!
