Napoleonic Wargame Club (NWC)

The smoke from the gunpowder has barely started to cover the fields of the Struggle of Nations 1 Tournament, and I am already thinking ahead to the next one. I hope to start SON 2 near the beginning of Summer 2012. Our SON 1 Tournament should be in the final rounds at that time, which means most of the officers will be free to take on another competition. Here is what I am thinking….

SON 2 will be a single elimination tournament based on the very impressive, new Leipzig title. All matches will be single player games. The purpose of the tournament will be similar to the MOE tournaments of the past, in that the goal will be to determine the “Best of the Best”. The tournament will be divided into the following three categories:

• Guards Officers – Players must hold a commission in a Guards unit.
• Junior Officers – Players must hold a rank of Major or lower.
• General Membership – Open to all players.

Qualified officers may sign up in the various categories as they choose. All officers will play by the same set of Optional and simple House rules. Scenarios would be custom designed for the tournament.

I would welcome everyone’s feedback on this idea and, if you are interested, I would encourage you to purchase a copy of Leipzig so that you could familiarize yourself with the newest HPS game system before the tournament begins. Heck, given Scott Ludwig’s enthusiastic outburst when the Leipzig title was first released, we might even get “Old Windy” to join us this time.

Hmmm, I wonder which side he would want to play?

Bill, nothing new on SON 2 at the moment. I have posted a brief update on the results so far in SON 1 under the thread, So You Want a Tournament. I had previously notified Scott that we needed to update the pairings page to show the victories to date. That is what he is referrencing in his previous post here.

Nice - Allies 8, French 1 so far in SON1.

So will SON2 be known as SON of SON?

Mon ami there's something wrong when the Grand Armee is in the lost ! Monsieur Bone head commander said that i wine the whole game! Well if none of the other French Player got B---- to speak up and not barbets then am calling foul when you got all the French players playing one another this will be moi last Tournament!

My Dear Colonel Dumas:

I had no control over the outcome of the Round 1 Tournament scenarios. I assure you that it was a very balanced fight. I will reiterate, however, that this particular tournament was intended to be a social tournament. It was never my intention to use it to decide who recieves Army Bragging Rights. If you notice, I have never once touted the Round 1 results as a Coalition Victory over the Armies of France. I am not looking at this in that manner at all. If you think Round 1 was tough, wait until these guys get a good, healthy dose of Round 2 where the players are paired in multi-player teams with the most senior officers playing with the most junior officers. My hope is that everyone will conduct themselves in the proper spirit of play, and that the senior officers will help teach and inspire thier junior partners. The SON 2011 Tournament is not about winning and beating your chest for all to see. It is a totally different concept altogether. It is about teamwork, mentorship and social networking. Now, the pending SON 2012 Tournament.....yes, that one will be entirely individual in which the best officer, divided by the categories of Guard, General Membership and Junior, will win. It's the one where the victor steps up on the soapbox, pulls out his bullhorn, and loudly declares himself to be King (or Emperor depending on your particular affiliation) and compels everyone else to bow before his greatness.

Again, even in the 2012 Tournament, I will have no control over which side of this club advances in victory. I will always pair French against Coalition whenever possible, but I have to work with whoever wins.

I reviewed the round 1 game for Mark and concurr it was balanced.
I believe Mark is doing a great job on this tournament an often thank less task.
As for lots of French players losing well I am not sure that means anything.

Mon General I beg to differ which is my right! I didn't like the rules the winner won by points I could have set on my side of the river and it would have been a draw. But since I can't voice my displeasure I won't. Just like you gave advice in one of my games you have a right to voice your thoughts.But I have never gave advice over to the whole club in a way to win a game and not one person said any thing about it.So Monsieur you are the champ and every one listens. Well their should be unity in the Armee not free for all. That is my voice sounding displeasure and you say the game was balance well you had to be the only French winner or maybe am a country to himself.

Colin did not play in the tournament, Cliff. He is a totally neutral party in this regard. As a matter of fact, Jeff Bardon defeated my Army Commander, Marco Bijl, after which Marco told me that he thought the scenario was unbalanced............in favor of the French!

If the battle were not played on points, and the French were allowed to hide behind the river for the entire length of the battle, anybody could get a Draw as the French. It would be an absolutely guaranteed outcome, in which case there would be absolutely no need to waste one's time even playing the battle.

What really happened is this: The scenario was so well balanced that the side having the most experienced officers sign up for the tournament emerged with the most wins. The experience of the players determined the outcome, not any imbalance in the scenario, which is exactly how I think a tournament should play out. I paired the officers as best I could with what I had, but the fact of the matter was that the experience of the officers that participated in the tournament was not equal. Based on the pairings, some very excellent officers dropped into the Loser's Bracket, including Paco and Marco. As I have said, Cliff, my goal for this tournament is most likely different from any other tournament that has ever been played in this club. My goal is that everyone have fun in their games and learn to work well with others. It is not about winning. It is all about how you approach the game.

James Bell is my MP partner for Round 2. I have never played with, or against, him before so I honestly don't know his skill level. I do know that he does not have years of experience. I suspect he has very little in fact, but I am going to teach him and train him and help him all I can to become a better player working by my side in this tournament. I want him to have fun and grow as a gamer. I want exactly the same thing for the two fine, French officers who oppose us. I will never touch any of James' units. He will move them on his own. To move for him might help us win the round if I am indeed the better player, but I would personally consider it to be a tragic defeat. He will learn better if he plays under a watchful and supportive coach. He will learn absolutely nothing if I simply take over and move everything for him. Well, nothing except that this club sucks and I am an arrogant jerk. Not the path that I am willing to take. We may lose, but if so, we will lose honorably. More than that, we will lose together, as a team. That is what this tournament is all about to me.

Just my two cents, Cliff, but I certainly do respect your right to disagree.

Cliff I agree you are free to speak I have absolutely no problem with that. I just wanted you to know I reviewed the scenario and I would be happy to play either side. 110% happy. And as Mark says I am neutral as I am not playing in the tourney (well actually probably biaised towards France).

Now I recall you were upset with me at some point I also would like you to know that was a misunderstanding I recall the post was that you cannot win in Jena-Auerstedt with one side or the other. I mearly posted the strategy that can be used to win. I did not actually realise you were playing it with someone at the time. My apologies on that one.

To be honest your posts can be difficult to follow sometimes. Never the less I value free speech so feel free to disagree. Also a final note I am not the champ of anything. Jeka beat me in the MOE4 final.

BTW, can you tell be where the release button is for this infernal cuirass you have so villianously strapped around my torso.......or are you going to make me get a cutting torch?

SON 1 site should be updated before Saturday night, I hope. SON 2 should be loaded up by Monday morning after I reengineer it. I have been extremely busy the past month, but have been trying to follow things as time allows.
