The day was a rare exception. Not a drizzling greyness or a sleeting murk they were already getting used to, but a full-scale day. With the sun shining through gaps in dark low-sitting clouds. The air was still and clear. The forest they were passing through stood motionless as if in a dream, in a fairy tale. Not a sound to be heard but for the hiss of the last falling leaves. Even the sound of the hoofs was absorbed by leaves, wettened with a melted snow.

But gradually the forest filled with sounds. Following the battle of Vyazma Russian army keenly followed the humiliated French and now Army commander with his tiny escort of cossacks gradually overtook one of the columns. An infantry regiment and a position battery reinforced with men, arms? animals and rushing west in order to join the Army. Two officers approached, covered in mud to the eybrows and above.

One, Poruchik Oleg Grachev, was recently appointed commander of the 2nd Position battery in 2nd Grenadiers division VIII corps. Another, Petr Michalek, commanding Smolensk infantry regiment recently rejoined the rank of the Army after an resignation. He still wears his civillian uniform and the Army commander makes a note to deal with the rank of the officer.

"Carry on, gentlemen! A bit more efforts and we will cut them off in Smolensk!"

The small group of cossacks led by a cuirassiers general rides forward, while the troops continue their laborious march through the quagmire of a country road.

Welcome!

(In the tradition of Tolstoi a maximum number of words were used to introduce these new members. If there is a CliffNotes version available, I'd love to find out how many joined and their names.) :D

Al,

for that purpose there exists the Army website
http://www.nwc.albom55.ru/RusArmy/index.html

With the utmost minimum of words it states:

September - October
...
RECRUITS

Alexandr Maltsev
- Astrakhan Grenadier Regiment
Dmytro Lukin
- Malorossia Grenadier Regiment
Oleg Grachev
- 2nd Position Battery

Plus soon it will be followed by

APPOINTMENTS

Petr Michalek
-Smolensk Infantry regiment

Info on Petr is not there yet, 'cause we need some more time to reconstruct his dossier.

And here I can safely satisfy my graphomaniac needs. Thank God these needs are very modest! ;-)

Welcome to the NWC Oleg and Petr. So sorry that General Kosyanenko has you slogging through the mud, but that does seem to be the lot of a soldier. At least you are victoriously advancing. I am afraid the same cannot be said for those dejected Frenchies you are pursuing. :D :P

Al,

The former two officers were already welcomed with a previous post. So this one, as you correctly mentioned, dealt only with the latter two. It may seem messy. But in the current circumstance this is the best we all can achieve.

A Russian to the right of me, a Russian to the left of me, a Russian to the front of me and a Russian behind me! My, my, only 1 of me and only 4 of them, well it looks like I have the advantage!

Never the less, welcome to the new Russian Officers to the NWC!

Battle On............
