"May your victories be many, Herr Leutnant French", he says as he tips the glass and consumes its contents in one smooth, practiced motion, "so long as you are playing toy soldiers on maneuvers with the other misguided followers of the Corsican fool, but I have to warn you, sir, that when you step upon the field against a fine officer of the Coalition, do not be surprised if your seeming good fortune takes a radical turn for the worse."

"To Leutnant French and the pompous Emperor of France. If it were not for the insatiable ambition of the latter to subjugate everything that comes within his sight, we soldiers would have no glorious wars to fight and would most likely be unemployed. And if it were not for the misguided judgment of the former to enlist in the lost cause of the Island Born Despot, we Coalition officers would not have a suitable place to charge the costs of our drinks today."

"Helga, please place my drink on the tab of the young Leutnant in the finest tradition of your esteemed tavern. It would not be wise for him to carry any coin onto the field of his first engagement in any case. Such transported wealth just makes the Cossacks more dangerous and aggressive."

Of course, you may take, how you say "Advantage" of the newly commissioned, and out pay. Well, you may have our coin! However, let the talk be what it may, the true test will be on the battlefield! Let it be known: I intend to meet all forces of reaction to our Revolution and its noble Protector, the Emperor, with cold steal and warm lead! Long live the Emperor!

Welcome David, now let me tell you a secret...Any advice that Marechal Bardon gives you do the complete opposite. He is a very bad player and to my knowledge has yet to notch his first victory...This will insure your sucess and bring you lots of victories...

I would never lie to a new member of the French Army.

I would have to agree with the good, British Field Marshall.

(because he will not be bashful about having me court marshalled if I don't)

As an example, Marechal Bardon will no doubt tell you that you should never form square in front of enemy artillery. Poppycock, the lot of it. A French square in front of Allied guns is a perfectly good formation to adopt. Never in the annals of military history has a French square been captured by a battery of British heavy guns. It is an unconquerable formation which I would encourage you to use at every opportunity.

You might also consider breaking down into full skirmish order every time you encounter enemy cavalry in the open. So many men running about utterly confuses your opponent's horsemen.

Just a few pointers from your friends on the other side of the field, but whatever you do, unilaterally ignore anything that Marechal Bardon may instruct on proper tactics. That goes for the French Peacock Knox as well.

Very kind of you to share such tactical wisdom with the new French Officers MG Jones. They will go far with such tactical acumen. I am sure The Peacock will probably tell them to stack infantry with their guns but we all know this to be very unwise. Doing such will cause the gunners to shoot high and lower the effectiveness of their guns by an order of magnitude...I will find in the Users Guide where this algorithim is described and post it for all our new French friends.

Welcome Lieutenant David French from one who has graduated on the same day but into the superior Allied Army I feel this gives us a certain connection which I will honour thus.
