Feb. 14th, 1800+ (Napoleonic War's Continuum)

The common room of the Rhine Tavern is filled this evening with officers from all the armies gathered and drinking toasts it seems to more than a few new recruits to the eagle standards of L'Empereur Napoleon.

Sitting at his usual table in a back corner where best he might observe the proceedings and make the notes in his ever present journals, sits the scribe sipping from a glass of his favorite whiskey.

At his feet lay curled the black cat Josephine, who when the Tirailleur officer she kept as her own was away, remained with the Scotsman.

The door opened and into the smoke filled room walked a stranger.
The scribe gazed at this figure with keen interest.
Was this a mere child entering this place he thought to himself.
The stranger was certainly no taller than a child, but his girth exceeded such expectation. Hmm he concluded, now that I can see more clearly the facial features as the stranger stood still beneath a hanging light, no child's face bears such growth of hair upon it. A dwarf then.

It was one of the small people the scribe could see now.
What would bring one into this place? he wondered.

Josephine raised her head from where it rested upon her paws, and peered also at the figure. No, not at the dwarf (though it was he that certainly had caught the attention of many other's in the room), rather, Josephine was looking upon the even smaller shape that followed the newcomer inside.

It was a cat. Passingly familiar to her... Gray coated fur, and those eyes, that nose, those whiskers, brought back some distant memories.

Their eyes indeed locked, and the gray cat moved immediately out from the protective presence of the dwarf, and fairly raced across the room.
To come stand raptly before her.

Their noses took scent of each other, and, Mother, dear! the gray nuzzled it's face into her's.

Eugene! and Josephine tumbled into the embrace of her long lost son!

The scribe was watching this happen, and a smile broke across his face at this sudden activity. Most delightful he said aloud.

Looking up he noticed that the dwarf stood now before him waiting as if for some command or greeting.

Good sir, how may I oblige you the scribe addressed him.

Ahem the dwarf cleared his throat. May I present myself sir, I am called Noblock and we have travelled far these many moons to reach this place, seeking for... his voice trailed off.

You and the cat? the scribe asked.

The cat and I and, well another too Noblock answered.

The scribe tried to see what other this was, but saw no one else near to hand.

Seeing his look, Noblock continued, Myself, the cat - who is called Eugene, and is the son of Josephine here, he paused but a moment, and Mi-Lady.

Lady, what Lady? the scribe inquired.

She awaits outside, til I was assured this was the place Noblock informed him.

The right place for what?

The right place for whom, you mean.

The scribe was becoming confused.

The door opened again, and all eyes turned to see a woman enter the room, her hands pulling back the cloak hood which covered her head and cast her face in shadow. Long tresses of raven colored hair tumbled down about her shoulders. Rosy cheeks, and full red lips that when she smiled cast a light of their own upon this place.

Noblock beckoned to her, and she walked past the knots of officers at their tables who all followed her with their eyes, but none dared speak, as if knowing that any utterance they could make would only profane this vision.

May I present the Lady Charissa Noblock said in introduction when she had reached them.

The scribe stood and proffered a seat to her, which she graciously accepted.

Helga came over quickly, asked what service she could offer them.

Spiced wine for Mi-Lady, a flagon of ale for me Noblock ordered for them, and added, some milk for Eugene.

I will hear your tale now the scribe said, for I expect it to be one that will make me wonder.

Charissa graced him with a warming glance, and spoke, We seek an officer who I believed to be found in these environs, a Tirailleur.

To be continued... soon.

Regards,

Helga brought their drinks to the table, and saucers of milk for the cats. "Oh aren't they delightful, and so happy with each other," she said while bending down to pet them gently.

As they sipped their drinks, with Noblock lighting a pipe with Old Tobey 'baccy leaf, they listened as the tale was fair spun upon Charissa's voice.

She told of days in youth growing up the daughter of a merchant prince in the kingdom of Bavaria.
And of the young boy, the son of the estate's gamekeeper. Many were the times they spent exploring the steep and forested hills of that beautiful country.

And as they grew older, the bond between them had become one of deep and abiding love.
She recalled vividly the scene when on a high and sun dappled meadow, they plighted their troth together.

But this loving union only aroused the wrath of her father, who had other plans to marry his daughter to the son of another noble, to better increase the family fortunes.

This nobleman descended one day upon the young man with a terrible band of ruffians, and when defending himself from their attack, he struck and gravely wounded the nobleman.
Such an offense against an aristocrat would have cost him limb if not life, and so he was forced to flee into exile from his home and country.

But not before in their last desperate and tearful farewell, he promised to come back for me, and I vowed to remain faithful to our heart-bond.

The letters that came in the passing months and years told of his journey to Italia, and the taking up of service in the famed light infantry of the principality of Piedmont. He rose in the ranks impressing with his superb marksmanship, a skill developed from his youth when he would hunt in the wild for deer and wolves.

But then the letters turned to the news of war, as Napoleon, the general who would become first consul and finally Emperor of France brought defeat to the Court of Turin.
Although he had fought initially against the warlord, during the temporary peace that was affected, the Tirailleur answered the republic's call of liberty, equality, and fraternity.

But my situation was growing ever more dire, as my father threatened to imprison me in a nunnery, if I did not marry the slowly recovering nobleman.

Charissa pause as if fighting back against a memory better left undisturbed. I resolved to flee myself, joined only by Noblock here, a longtime servant of the family, and a friend of both of ours.

The way travelled was dangerous in place and times, certainly not fit for the lady alone the dwarf spoke.

It must not have been an easy road agreed the scribe. He swirled the last of the whiskey from the glass into his mouth, and then, what will you do now?

Is he not here? Charissa's voice now carried the trace of fearful uncertainty.

I'm afraid he's off on campaign the scribe scratched his head, Somewhere in distant Silesia I think.

Oh, and Charissa cast down her face, visibly shaken at this news.

Suddenly there was a commotion outside, as if a number of men were approaching, their boisterous voices echoing far through the still late hour of the night.

The door swung open and they turned their heads to see... a figure stepping through the portal and into the room.

In his hands he bore a bouquet of flowers wild picked from an orchard near to far.
And the Tirailleur's face broke into a broad grin as with much delight and shout of joy Charissa ran quickly to his arms.

(for my wife Charissa, who is kindly patient with my time spent upon the battle maps in the company of the Tirailleurs et Dragons!)
Gentlemen,

I have had correspondence with Todd regarding the post on the 15th to the Coalition members. I have two or three issues with this.

Mark you mentioned that as a member you are allowed to state your opinion. I mentioned to Todd that I thought it was inappropriate, also stating that the Campaigning period was over. Todd disagreed and basically said campaigning could be done during the voting process. WHY DO WE HAVE 3 PHASEs in the process? Nomination, campaigning and voting????????????

Your post Mark was also slanderous. BTW

As President and or Member of the Cabinet you have more influence than a common member. To me what you did was a very bad lack of judgment.

This is like a Boss asking a pretty employee out on a date. In his defense in front of his boss He states I was asking as an ordinary guy liking a girl. BUT IT IS NOT. You could have the best intentions but that is not what the pretty employee might interpret. GEE I might get fired if I don’t say yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What are you guys thinking? And Todd supporting the action?

Can you now see, the both of you, the impropriety of the Cabinet actively supporting one candidate over the other, which Mark you have stated during the campaigning and then grievously adding to it by sending out an emails to all the Coalition members, and not only that slandering both me an Jeff. Todd you stated support this as well

You should be both be kicked out of the club. You kicked out some that did less than this. Rich Hamilton, give me a break.

Mark you stated you wanted peace. Well you just declared War on me and Jeff. Maybe it was not intentional and I would like to believe that but the situation is intolerable.

This must be addressed with an appropriate action. What are you guys going to do?

Pierre

Dear Pierre:

Thank you for your recent emails to the cabinet at large, as well as to individual cabinet members, expressing your concerns with the voting process. In our response, we have tried to address all of your issues.

As we have reiterated to you several times, it is our firm position that this election is being conducted in full compliance with the member approved rules of the NWC.

This election process that is being followed was first used in the 2011 Presidential election for the club. It was put into place precisely to move away from the process that you are advocating should be used now.

This same election process was also used in the PRO election held earlier this year.

As it is a legitimate election in accordance with the current Club Rules, it would be unfair to halt the ongoing election at this point in time.

The issues that you have raised are duly noted, and those made by others have been noted as well, and addressed by the Cabinet as we felt were warranted.

There are some valid points that are worthy of consideration which could possibly be used to improve the election process in the future, once the ongoing election is concluded. Any proposed revisions to the election process would have to be placed in front of the membership, and approved by their majority vote in accordance with the Club Rules, before such revisions would become effective.

Having said that, it is our contention that there are serious flaws in many of the arguments that have been presented, both by yourself as well as by others, in recent posts and emails. One such example being your assertion that the Cabinet somehow “kicked” Rich Hamilton out of the club when, in point of fact, Rich Hamilton resigned entirely of his own free will.

It is the Cabinet's decision that the ongoing election will continue to its proper conclusion.

We assure you that every ballot received will be tabulated in accordance with the current Club Rules.

We encourage you to allow the ongoing election process to continue. Upon its conclusion, you may resubmit any concerns that you still have.

The Cabinet of the NWC is composed of members elected by the membership - the PRO Todd Schmidgall by an election held earlier this year (using this same process) and Mark Jones as President, elected to the position three times by the membership, and Al Kling as CiC of LGA.

We will use all our governing authority to stop any attempt to usurp the legitimate election process, and any effort to otherwise continue the undue influencing of the election process that is currently underway.

Please be aware that I have included Al Kling in this email as he also an elected member of the NWC Cabinet.

Best Regards,
Mark

So as to not break the mood..... Der Wurger exited out the back door, humming a tune, or was it to wipe a tear from his unseen eyes....

Nicely done. :) :)

I think it's a nice story. It's a great valentine gift for your wife because you write fine. I love literature and it's great to read stories well written and it's a good point too use the forum not only for the game discussions.

Sir Muddy was much impressed by the romance of it all... and he knew his own Lady would be touched as well.
