My Fellow Officers of the NWC, Salute. Let me first start by thanking everyone for the opportunity to seek your support for the post of the Club’s Public Relations Officer. I will try my best to keep this speech short, nonetheless , I believe it is important to briefly outline who I am and why I joined the NWC. In my view, this is essential for you to be comfortable and confident that in casting your vote in support of my candidacy, you will be choosing an individual who is presently very much engaged in the club activities and shares your view to continue to make the club the best that it can be for the benefit of all of our members.
Now, for a little background let me tell you that I am Canadian, born in a small town in Nova Scotia, but raised in Halifax, ( my father was in the Canadian Navy and was stationed in Halifax, the home of Canada’s eastern fleet) . After finishing my education my career took me to many places across Canada and ultimately blessed me with the opportunity to work and live in the beautiful Caribbean region. I have been away from Canada for the past thirteen years and in that time have lived in Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Cayman Islands and now presently in Puerto Rico.
I have always had a keen interest in Military History, but a special interest for the epoch of the Napoleonic area. My first interest in war gaming was with Avalon Hill board games. Moving to Jamaica there was very limited opportunity to continue with this side of my hobby and I was fortunate enough to discover the Talonsoft Battleground series. Many hours of solitaire play were spent on Prelude to Waterloo, Waterloo and Napoleon in Russia. With changes in computer technology these wonderful games seemed to experience their problems and I somehow stumbled on to the HPS series of games and the expanded period of Napoleonic history which they covered.
It was with the acquisition of the HPS games that I joined the NWC in May 2008. My initial interest in joining the club was to find human opponents, ( as we all know about the AI capabilities of our beloved games), so initially was not very active in the forums other than the “opponent needed” threads. Through the email exchanges I met more and more members and also became more active in the French Army to enjoy the role playing aspects of the club. The role playing and enjoyment of sharing ( and seeking) more knowledge led me to post more frequently in the Rhine Tavern and in doing so expanded my contact with different members even further.
As I posted more frequently, and came to meet more members I thought it was important for me to give something back to the club that had provided me with the opportunity to enjoy and share my passion for Napoleonic History. As a result I was selected to assume command positons within the French Army and I am presently the Corps Commander for V Corps. The opening up of the PRO positon on the cabinet provides yet another opportunity for me to contribute even more to the club I so dearly love ,and to continue to make it the best history and gaming club possible.
I am a strong supporter of the theory that encouraging participation in the clubs forums is the best recipe to strengthen the fabric of the club. It is addictive – the more members who get comfortable participating in our forums the more active they will become in our club. I know from experience, this was what hooked me.
I am an active Corp Commander and try to maintain contact with all of the members in our Corps (team). I continually encourage V Corps members to participate in MP games so as to build comradery within the Corps but to also broaden their exposure to Coalition members. I remain very active in the forums and when not travelling on business make it a point to visit the forums daily.
I am also active in the ACWGC (the American Civil War Game Club) and I am a member of the Blitz. My relationships with the members I know in these clubs will serve me well if elected as they give me a wonderful opportunity to tell people about our great club.
As your Public Relations Representative I am committed to
a) Remaining very active in our club forums b) Increasing my activity in other club forums to promote the tremendous advantages of our club c) Continuing to maintain active dialogue with our own general membership d) Maintaining my involvement in recruiting and helping new members e) Promoting and supporting our Club f) Having an open door and open mind to any issue that the general membership wish to bring to cabinet. g) Promoting and championing the skill of practicing civility in exchanging views and sharing ideas
I hope that my history of active involvement in our club demonstrates my commitment to continuing to try to make our club the best it can be and thus enhance the enjoyment of all our members. I truly appreciate your time in reading my message, and ask for your support in electing me to the club’s cabinet
Best Regards Roy Purcell
