Greetings,

I am writing this to seek your support in voting for me for election as President of the NWC.

I am 47 years old, and live with my wife (and 4 cats) in the state of Maine (northern New England), in the USA.

Like so many others here, I got my start long, long ago playing military strategy board games such as those put out by Avalon Hill.

Upon discovering the original Talonsoft Napoleonic Battleground series, I spent countless more hours playing hot seat with my brothers and friends (and what a hot seat that could prove to be!).

I have been a member of our club since the Fall of 2011, discovering the club through the advertising insert in the first HPS game I bought - Jena-Auerstadt.

In these three years I have been very active, starting with the forming of my own MP battle team, the Tirailleurs et Dragons! (currently 8 officers strong!).

I formed this team as a way to increase interaction among my fellow LGA officers.

My levels of game activity (I typically have around 9 battles, 3+ maneuvers, and 2+ training games going at any one time), participation in LGA, and in our club forums have enabled me to rise in rank and command, serving first as chef d'état-major of IV Corps, and now as commander of the esteemed Reserve Cavalerie Corps.

I am also the Tournament Liaison for LGA, and helped to organize the SON II Tournament.

I was instrumental in the formation of LGA's Corps wide Bataillons de Honneur MP teams, as a means of increasing both the levels of MP gaming in the club, and army officer interactions.

As a training instructor in the Ecole Militaire, something I enjoy very much, I have the pleasure of meeting the new recruits to LGA, and learning about how they chose to join our club.

CiC, Al Kling recently made me the first officer to serve in the role of an Imperial Aide de Camp, helping to administer the duties of running La Grande Armee.

And I can say with pride that I am yet another example that within each fantassin's knapsack is a coveted Marechal's baton!

I was a supporter of the Revised Club Rules which were approved by the overwhelming margin of the membership earlier this year.

I have been a believer in and supporter of all the fine improvements that Mark Jones, who has served the last three years as our President ( being popularly elected to the position in 2011, and reelected unopposed in 2012 and 2013), has done for and brought to the NWC.

If elected to the office of President I will strive to continue, among many things, the excellent service he has provided in the role of administering the DoR registrations of games, and informing the club army CiC's of their need for timely review of officer records for promotions and awarding of medals.

I will look to further expand the fine tradition of club sponsored tournaments which have proven to be so popular among the membership.

The NWC belongs to the membership, and we deserve leadership which is engaged, and accountable.

The membership deserves leadership that displays a respect for the past, an abiding concern for the present, and looks to the evolving future of the club.

The membership deserves leadership that will in timely fashion resolve game registrations - thereby allowing us to enjoy the fruits of our labors upon the battle maps - among these being promotions in rank and awarding of medals.

The membership deserves leadership that encourages participation and interaction as we play our games and discuss the historical epoch we find ourselves all so wonderfully drawn to.

The membership deserves leadership that welcome us when we join the club, and to be heard when we have questions or concerns.

The membership deserves leadership that does not tolerate or otherwise encourage by their silence bullying, personal threats, or efforts to disaffect us.

In the 3 years that I have been a member of the NWC I have contributed over 1300 posts to the forums.

Posts that are an expression of dedication, integrity, trustworthiness, respect for others and personal character.

All of this the membership have been able to see, reflect upon, and this very year chose to support my ideas and clearly voted their approval of the qualities thereof, having elected me to the position of Public Relations Officer, which has given me a unique insight into the administrative and governance aspects of our club, and an appreciation for the hard work and effort this involves by all those who volunteer their time to support the daily operations of the NWC.

My short time as the PRO has shown me what all can be done for our club when the Cabinet members work together to do everything they can to improve our experience here.

It is my core belief that this club is about membership first, and army affiliation second.

That without the club, there are no armies.

I have always sought to cultivate relationships with officers on the other side of the hill in the Coalition forces, to share with them our common ground of exciting play and discussions of the games and the historical period.

For all of you whom I have had the good fortune to meet here and become friends with, fellow gamers in Europe, India (shout out to Karol), and here in the USA, I offer my thanks for the fellowship you have offered me in kind.

In closing, I would like to say that the other candidate in this campaign, Pierre Desruisseaux, is someone I have come to know and become friends with here as well, through gaming and conversations, and I have great respect for him - as someone who dedicates his own time and service to enabling each of our experiences here.

It is an honor to have my name put forth as a candidate for your consideration for the position of President of the NWC.

I look forward to the opportunity to continue serving the membership, working to make this a great place to gather and play the games we all enjoy so much.

My warmest regards, to one and all.

Todd Schmidgall
Member &
Public Relations Officer,
NWC

I don't like being on sides in this political stuff. I don't know Pierre but I sure respect and value everything he has done.
However with some reflection I want to officially endorse Todd who has won my respect in many ways. I think he would be a good president.

I know Todd well by now. He was very helpful in introducing me to a lot of stuff. He is solid and dedicated, but most importantly, he really enjoys wargaming and all that comes with it. I'm sure he'll work to get everyone involved and make the club even more fun.

Cheers!

I'd like to hear more specifics from the candidates on what they would do to move the club forward and hopefully spur some discussion as it has been too quiet.

What is your vision for the future of the club?

What do you see as the most pressing issue facing the club, and how would you approach it?

What would be the first action you would take if elected and why?

Gentlemen Officers of the NWC,

It is my deepest honor to have served you for the previous three years as your President.

I am writing to you now as I prepare to step aside from this position, as you will soon be choosing whom you wish to replace me.

It has been said that the person entrusted with the position of President is one who should exemplify the qualities of dedication, integrity, and respect for others, and I couldn't agree more.

I well remember the day, some three years ago, when a young, French officer first entered the Rhine Tavern. As is my normal habit, I was comfortably seated at my usual table in the guise of my Hanoverian personae, drinking Jägermeister, while making an entry in my official leather bound dispatch portfolio of the latest victory of one of our intrepid Coalition officers over a misguided servant of the Corsican Imp.

The young Frenchman was clad in the garb of a Tirailleur du Po, the legendary light infantry, that alone was enough to catch the attention of an old, Hanoverian Jager commander, but there was something else about this young man, something that was only very rarely seen in our new recruits. It was immediately obvious that this inexperienced, young Frenchman had potential, the true measure of which was yet to be determined.

I watched him as he steadily made his mark in our forums, and upon our club. His roleplaying was superb, and his formation of the Tirailleurs et Dragons was an excellent complement to my own beloved Hanoverians. His numerous, and frequent posts, brightened our forums, and kept things fun and interesting. He was always cordial, and worked to form the brotherly bonds with his allies, and opponents, that I truly believe are so important to the success of our club. Unlike so many, who were burned out, disinterested, or apathetic, he actively and vigorously pursued his goals, and was constantly striving to improve the standing of his army, yet realizing the truth that our club stands above its armies, and that we truly should be one band of gaming brothers. He labored to make things fun, and improve our club for all members, not just a select few.

Todd volunteered to really work, and he embraced his work. It was a labor of love for him, and his level of commitment and activity shone far above all others. He possessed the qualities of leadership that all who seek to be leaders here should strive to emulate.

These past months he has served beside me in the Cabinet, following his election as Public Relations Officer, and it has been remarkable to experience, along with my other fellow Cabinet members the truest sense of harmony, of common purpose and goal - of never looking to rest on the laurels of past success, but always looking to refine and to give shape and form to the future.

As I ponder my own future here, and of the work I have done and hope to continue in other aspects of our club, I am secure in the knowledge that this fine fellow is a fitting candidate to follow after me in this position of responsibility, and that he should well find support across the spectrum of our membership - as varied as it is in age, and language, and nationality.

You need not take my own view of him as the only proof of what I say, but read as well the number of posts in both the nomination and speech threads - they speak the same as I do - that here is a candidate before you most worthy of your entrusting with this great responsibility.

He does not shrink from the difficult tasks that are sometimes handed to us, and he always places the interests of the club first and foremost, over personal reward and gain, or favoritism.

Whereas I do believe that both Todd and Pierre have fine qualities that would well lend themselves in the service of the President of our club, and I certainly respect Pierre for all he has done to form this club sixteen years ago and the support he has given to me when needed, Todd’s level of commitment and activity over the past three years is apparent to all. I respect both men, but am, like everyone else, constrained to only one choice as to whom I think is the best person to lead our club forward into the future.

I proudly offer my full support in helping to elect Todd as the next President of the NWC, and encourage each and every one of you to do the same. He is a man of exemplary character and commitment, whose activity and energy for this post are utterly unrivaled. In my view, Todd Schmidgall is the clear choice as our next President of the NWC.

Sincerely,

Lt. General Mark Jones
NWC President
Coalition CinC (Elect)

Gentlemen,

I will not be as lengthy as the previous poster, but just want to say that Todd and I have played many games here at the club. He has shown great resolve with concern for the club and has taken on some difficult tasks. He communicates well and is willing to listen. He is always looking forward in ways to help improve the club and does not rely on just the "old way of doing things". I strongly support Todd for President of the NWC!

My best,

I also will be supporting Todd as I know him to be an honest, straight forward and stand-up guy. I think he will be a positive influence and stear the club in the direction most members would like to see it go. :frenchsalute:

Salute!

Jeff Bardon said: ...it has been too quiet.

To this I think I will echo what Pierre offered up - it's been kind of nice...

Jeff asked the following questions: I'd like to hear more specifics from the candidates on what they would do to move the club forward and hopefully spur some discussion...

What is your vision for the future of the club?

My vision for the future of the club is that it continues to be a place that current members, and new members, will enjoy, as a comfortable and engaging site for gathering to discuss all the varied aspects of the games we play, and share our knowledge with one another on this historical epoch.

We are a global membership, who speak many languages, and I'm pleased to see that in the past year or two that there have been efforts put into translating various web pages and information into different languages - a laborious task that has seen the involvement of many different members volunteering their time and skills to aid in this.

Al Kling deserves honorable mention for spearheading this endeavor.

What do you see as the most pressing issue facing the club, and how would you approach it?

When I ran for Public Relations Officer earlier this spring I believe I answered this question, and it remains the same today - and will likely always be the same - the most pressing issue for this club, or any such club, is the twin task of retaining present membership - and growing that membership.

It was something I addressed immediately by looking at what steps those that had preceded me in the office had done, and how I would be able to continue their work, as well as seeking out potentially new methods of achieving this task.

As a training instructor for the Ecole Militaire, I am always asking the new recruits how they came to join us - by and large the answers follow the same pattern: found us on the internet, through information in the games they have bought, from meeting members of our club at other related clubs, and through conversation with their friends.

This engagement with our new members is a vital tool for understanding the best path to take forward.

What would be the first action you would take if elected and why?

If I am fortunate enough to be elected to the position of President I will make my first priority to engage with the Cabinet, so that we all have a clear vision, and sense of purpose as to what the goals we will set for ourselves to accomplish in the coming year of my term of office, will be.

As I said above, I believe that the most pressing issue is that of retaining and growing our membership.

We need to be aware of what challenges we face to do this, and how best to succeed.

This will take teamwork, something I can say that the current Cabinet of which I am still presently a member, has done remarkably well.

In my campaign speech near the top of this thread I laid out what I see as the basic requirements of leadership, and how the leadership of this club can best serve the interests of the membership.

This includes the Cabinet working with the membership in many areas of our club functions, such as I mentioned before, the translation of information into more of the languages that are spoken here, and in the tournaments - which I would say is the single most popular club wide activity the membership clearly enjoys, as one can see from the thread at the top of this forum.

Knowing the hard work this involves I would like to thank the current President Mark Jones who has done yet another tremendous job in organizing this event, and those members who participated in helping to create it.

Thank you,

Bon jur Mon Ami on behalf of the Emperor of Haiti and as his vice Roy to the NWC, I convey his well wishes in the coming election. I find you personality to be not only a talented player but a very interesting person, we do miss your stories in the tavern. Might I say return to your first love of writing for it brought many into the tavern just to step on that cat's tail. May this be a new AGE FOR THE GATHERING OF EAGLES.

I have gotten to know both candidates over the years and have considered what each has said in their speeches.

As the CiC of the LGA, I know what kind of leader it takes to represent the club to the public.
Todd, the membership can trust in your record and your character. We can respect the manner in which you have conducted yourself here. As well as your above the call of duty using your free time for the benefit of the club and its members.

You have my vote, and I encourage the membership to support you as well

Fellow Officers Salute!

As a club we are blessed to have two solid individuals to have been put forth to the membership as candidates for our next president. At the risk of showing my age a song comes to mind

“Did you ever have to make up your mind
Pick up on one and leave the other behind
It's not often easy and not often kind
Did you ever have to make up your mind

Did you ever have to finally decide
Say yes to one and let the other one ride
There's so many changes and then you finally have to decide...”

Well like the fellow in that song – in a few short weeks we will have to decide on a new president.

These speeches are good and indeed do give a vision of what the candidate is thinking, but for me I have to look behind the speeches to the performances I have personally witnessed. For me to support a real life political candidate I have to be certain that what is written will be reflected in the future and do I have the facts (and knowledge) to know that a politician is not only “talking the talk but will walk the walk”. The same holds true in voting for the right candidate in our club and assessing what each candidate is bringing to the table now - does what they are doing now support the message they are conveying in the speech ?.

So we have two very appealing candidates that have both contributed greatly to the club, however after a lot of thought on these achievements as the song says “Say yes to one and let the other one ride.” What sways the balance for me is what I have seen since my joining the club in 2008. A transformation began to occur in 2012 – with the arrival of Todd as well as several other new members, including our current president, a group that re-energized an already good club into a great club.

Todd is active in our forums every day and weighs in on every important issue with that same enthusiasm but with the skill not to drown out the voice of the member trying to make their point, even if that issue does not seem to catch the attention of all of the membership. I believe it is very important to have a president that is above all else actively engaged with the membership through the forums. Todd has clearly demonstrated that commitment.

With the formation of Battle Groups Todd has re-energized the MP format within our club, opening the doors to members to diversify their experiences and friendships. The posts in the forums around these battles draw large numbers of the members to these threads, as the number of views point out.

Todd actively encourages role play within the forums as he knows there is a group of our members that place great emphasis on this aspect.

He is active in the recruitment and training of new members.

Todd has, since the spring of this year also been serving on the club cabinet, having been elected by the membership in first ever election held for the new position of Public Relations Officer.

On top of this Todd is a very active Corps commander in the French Army.

As you can see, Todd’s level of participation in our club is second to none. So the examples we see now are what I believe we can expect from Todd as our new president

In other words and to put it very simply – from my perspective I support Todd because of the passion, effort and devotion of time he has made to the club that I have witnessed firsthand.

Please research the forums; you will see over 1300 posts, these posts echo my impression of Todd and clearly support the facts I have laid out above. Todd is enthusiastic, passionate and above everything else I think you will see a great love that embodies just one thing - the desire to see the club flourish and provide the best entertainment and enjoyment to its members.

This is why I support Todd for President and I sincerely hope when you consider all information, that you also will come to that very same conclusion.

The campaign period is now closed, and this thread has been locked. I will be emailing Voting Instructions to all officers. The instructions will be immediately followed by a Voting Form which you will need to submit in order to have your votes counted.

Thanks to all of the candidates for the cleanest campaign period that we have enjoyed here to date. Best of luck, gentlemen.
