It was a sunny, fall afternoon when the door of the Rhine Tavern swung open. A cool breeze of fresh air gently wafted into the great room, causing the many patrons to pause in their conversations and glance towards the entryway. Standing in the doorway was a British Guardsman, athletic in build, but unimposing in height. Several of the French patrons felt a shiver run up their spine at the sight, for they well knew this particular officer. This British officer was a Hanoverian.
Removing his helmet, the Hanoverian Commander of the King’s Dragoon Guards entered the great room, surveying the assembled patrons according to his usual custom, before gently closing the door behind him.
“Ach Helga, mein schönes Mädchen, es ist immer so gut, dich zu sehen”, said the officer to the beautiful barmaid as he cast a radiant smile in her direction. “Please forgive me, but I seem to have left a single bottle of expensive perfume waiting for you outside on the curb.”
Immediately upon hearing this statement, no less than six French officers arose from their seats and started furtively making their way to the tavern door. Seeing that their companions had the very same idea, they quickened their pace, and ended up literally running for the door. Flinging it open, they tumbled into the street, desperately grasping for a small package that had been left on the curb. Frustrated by the competition, they quickly broke into a full-fledged brawl over the prize that they all hoped to secure for themselves.
With an amused grin, the Hanoverian officer walked over to the open door, and gently closed it yet again. Helga smiled at the Hanoverian officer, and said “You did not really leave a bottle of fine perfume on the curb did you, Herr Jäger?”
“Why of course not, my dear”, said the Hanoverian officer as he walked over to the beautiful barmaid. “That would be foolish of me, considering how well I understand the nature of the Brigands of France, and their proclivity to steal everything they can get their hands on”, he said as he withdrew a finely wrapped bottle from under his coat.
Taking the proffered bottle, the beautiful barmaid kissed the Hanoverian on the cheek and said, “You will never change, will you?”
“Not planning on it my dear”, grinned the Hanoverian. “But now, to the business at hand…”
Reaching into his pocket, the Hanoverian Guardsmen withdrew a medal, and held it high so that all might see. “Gentlemen, this is the medal that was awarded to all of the participating Coalition officers upon their great victory over the forces of France in a tournament two years ago.” Reaching back into his pocket, he withdrew a second medal. “And this is the medal that was awarded to all of the Coalition officers upon their great victory over the forces of France in a tournament three years ago. The problem, gentlemen, is that you French officers have never won such medals as these for defeating the Coalition. Never.” He paused for a moment to let the thought sink in. “Well, I don’t think that is entirely fair, so here is what I propose to do about it. I have prepared a small tournament for any of you Frenchmen who still have the courage and will to fight. At stake will be a medal such as these for all of the participating officers on the side that emerges victorious from the engagement. Now, I am certain that the Coalition will take home this new medal as well, but I thought it only fair to allow you Frenchies the chance to see it before we do. You may find the general rules of engagement posted on the tavern bulletin board. If you are interested, just let me know. Helga, my dear, let's see how many bottles of Jager we can put away before the Frenchies find their courage.”
http://www.wargame.ch/wc/nwc/Club%20Tournaments/SON%202014/If you wish to participate in the 2014 SON Tournament, please enter a post in this topic expressing your desire to play. You will also need to choose in which division of the tournament you would like to participate: Optional Rules, Embedded Melee, or House Rules. I will take names until the end of the month. My hope is to make the pairings and get the tournament underway in the first week in October. If you want to do what this club was founded to do, i.e. play games, here is your chance.
