Battle of Zell
The battle of Maria Zell was fought in the foothills of Tyrolean Alps on 6 November 1805. While Napoleon was pursuing Coalition Armies east of Ulm, French corps under Marmont and Davout were ordered to prevent interference from Austrian Army forces to the south, in northern Italy and the Alps. Davout’s column entered the Alpine foothills in late October, plundering Austrian supply depots en route, and surprised General Merveldt’s 10,000 men guarding the passes around the village of Zell. Attacked across the snow before he had time to organize, Merveldt lost 8,000 men before managing to reassemble his routed corps in Hungary.
