Gentlemen

After all these years of playing HPS/JT I still discover new things.
I am playing my first Spanish Ulcer game in hot blood, Barrosa.
Sadly I allowed a multiple group of Spanish skirmishers to get almost surrounded along with their parent unit.
The skirmishers were disorganised but the parent unit routed. As most of the surrounding French were horse it surprised me to find if I moved the whole stack I could move past the cavalry. So even though the formed unit was routed it gave shelter to the skirmishers.

Yes, I can do that in other games too. It's a way of rescuing skirmishers about to suffer a terrible fate. In reality it may represent individuals taking refuge in a fleeing mob. Rather like me when I leave work.

Now I think I misunderstand it, with "past" do you mean through a hex with a cavalry unit?

Moving past but adjacent to a cavalry unit, a move that unless accompanied by a formed unit they would have been unable to execute

Why would the skirmishers be unable to I thought they are only disordered, aren't the routed units those that I can't move closer to the enemy?

A skirmisher can not move into a hex adjacent to a cavalry unit unless the hex is designated "cover" or is occupied by a formed unit. If the skirmisher/skirmishers have a formed unit as part of the stack they may also move into an adjacent hex, otherwise they cannot make the move.
