Today is Memorial Day in the USA. Wanting to post some that have fallen that I know or who died (family member) before I was born:
Bud Dupree - cousin - died in a B17 over Holland - buried in the large cemetery in Holland. He was a navigator and the plane below theirs was hit and went up into Bud's plane. Both planes went down together.
Jim Holtum - friend - US Army Nat. Gd - combat engineer - SSgt Holtum was a fine leader. His troops looked up to him like a father figure. His team was on their way to defuse IEDs for a Marine unit when their light vehicle was destroyed by an IED. Soft spoken, from eastern Idaho, I got to meet him at our church in Boise/Meridian. Great guy. Wish I had known him more. Great sense of humor. A real man. I am not sure how many tours he did in Iraq. He had a fiance' waiting in Idaho. They had already picked out a house to buy.
Chris Eberich - US Army - member of the famed "Nightstalker" unit. He was a crewman on a Blackhawk. His helo went down in a training mission in Georgia when it struck a power line. Five tours in Afghanistan and three in Iraq. I knew his family well. They were very saddened at his loss.
<SALUTE>
Note: Bud was on my mom's side of the family. Bud's sisters for years would not talk about WW2 but later in life the youngest sister of Bud, Patricia, went over to Holland to see his grave. Not sure if the others had followed suit. She told me about her visit to see her brother's grave. Patricia is now gone - died four days before my mom in 2013.
Wish I could have met Bud. They all said he was a real great guy to know.
