I recently asked about boats and a quote was offered from the user manual. I didn't get one with the game I bought. Is it available? And to the boat question, I started a campaign to experiment. An opponent told me that I could move a unit next to a river and if it had 8 mps left I could just move it onto the river hex and boats would appear. This didn't happen and I can see no designation indicating boats on any of my units. I don't see any point in having boats if you don't know which units have them. Can anyone help me out with this.

If you go to the HPS site, you can download the updated manuals that go with the current version of your selected game.

There are two game manual files at the site, the first is a ".doc" that you can print out as a hardcopy and the second is a ".hlp" which is for use with the "Help" tab in the game.

The User Manual is always a .doc file, and you'd need to get the updated ones from hps, the same spot you patch from.

That said, the way to tell if a unit has boats is to look at its movement factors.

12 <=no boats
12B <=has boats

(With 12 being however many MP it has left)

This thread was pointed out to me by a gamer and I wanted to help you out on this Jon.

First, Has Boats were not used much in the game but when it was it was in a campaign situation AND its clearly spelled out in the briefing texts. Usually its a Strategy you choose in the Campaign engine.

Yes, you will have to go through the units to find them out but after thinking over the situation a bit it wont be hard to find them. They will be near the river for the most part.

For example in one scenario I have units with Has Boats capability and they are off by themselves ready to cross right at the beginning of the scenario.

I am hoping someday for a Highlight feature for Has Boats troops.

No, we dont provide a printed manual for the game. While folks have complained about this in the past it helps John and Scott Hamilton keep the price of the game down. If you want you can print out the manual from Word or from the .hlp file and put it in a binder.

User.doc or .hlp is always the most helpful for the gamer as it covers the units and capabilities the best. Someday I also hope that we have this help file listed in the Help pulldown menu as some folks miss it entirely. The Notes.hlp file is my own and has alot of useful charts and info for you guys.

Has anyone answered how you actually make the units use the boats? Apparently they do not work the same as the CCC units that have boats..

You put them IN the water and use those wooden sticks that fit onto the sides and then ROW across.[:o)]

While moving across, you sing:

Row, row, row your boat gently down the stream; merrily, merrily...[;)]

From CCC User.hlp manual:

Certain units may be designated has having Boats in a scenario. Units flagged in this way have the letter B following their movement value. These units are considered to be carrying small boats with them when they move. Units with this attribute have the ability to move into Water hexes and thereby cross rivers and other water obstacles.

From Napoleonic series User.hlp manual:

It is possible in some scenarios for units to be flagged as Has Boats. When this occurs, the movement value of the unit is followed with the letter B. When a unit has boats, then it can move into a water hex at a cost of 8 movement points. Leaders without the Has Boats feature can still move into water hexes if they move with units that have boats and do not leave those units while crossing the water hexes.

-----------

Units with Boats in the Nap. series move onto the water at a cost of 8 MPs. I believe in the EAW series its 4 MPs. Other than that there is nothing you have to do in order to move onto the water. Just move the unit next to a river and then move it onto the water hex.

Works for Ernie's swimming pool too guys! Wahoo! (Potatoes cannot have Has Boats capability - asked John for it but he wouldnt budge on that one)
