I've just started another NIR game against Richard Barrett. He's a veteran of this club so knows what he's doing. I've played a number of Bg games with him over the years.

Recently his pc went in for servicing. Since then we have hit problems. In Waterloo his leaders were mixed up with different names and colours. No big problem but in NIR we have hit this:

His artillery, 8 gun -batteries were hitting up to 2 Russian guns in the fleches per shot, with -3 modifyer !! Impossible. I understand how the pdt reads. He sent me his oob and pdt. It's the original and correct one. He uninstalled and reinstalled the game. Same thing. He deleted all games off his HD and reloaded. Same thing. His OS is XP, same as mine. It's like he has a nirproject version but the files he sent don't indicate this. As I see it the fire results can only come from the pdt and if what he sent is correct, then I can't explain his results.

I'm at a complete loss now to explain this or how to help him. He's getting very frustrated. Any help would be very appreciated as I don't want to lose this valued opponent.

Nope, original Talonsoft game. The pdt says I can only receive an increase in fatigue at most. One French 8 gun battery hit 3 guns in a fleche with a -3 modifyer. It's most odd.

It is almost like he has two complete setups for the game. One is the game he THINKS he is using and the other is the game he IS using.

If he has the NIR icon on his desktop, ask him to RIGHT click and check the FOLDER this game is in. Then check THAT folder for the correct files.

Then he should do a SEARCH of his HD, looking for NIR.EXE and he might find TWO of these.

Basic stuff, I know, but maybe a solution.

I know that I have 3 complete setups for NIR, labeled NIR, NIR-NS and NIR-A.

But that would only work if he were also unzipping the .bte files into the same (wrong) folder, no?

Hi Ernie
It certainly appears he has 2 setups for the game. He denies this saying he's deleted everything and the pdt he sends is certainly correct. However I'm sure this is the case despite what he says. It's the only logical explanation. I'm, wondering if being on a home network may have something to do with it.

Dierk. This is also true.

Which means we go in circles.

It is possible that the home network could be the culprit, but you have to physically make the shortcuts and links to the other computers.

I have 3 computers on my home network and I access each from the other, but not by accident.

Simple solution here, or it should be. Reinstall the game from scratch, make sure you have the correct patch. Forget about using desktop shortcuts. Start the game by using the NIR.exe icon in the base NIR folder. If it still doesn't work correctly, then you probably have a corrupt game file, and may have to start the game from the beginning.
