I know this has been posted before, but I have acquired a copy of Eckmuhl and need the links to game engine differences, tactics, etc.

What version does the NWC normally play? Is there an upgrade page on HPS site?

What settings does the NWC normally play? I understand there are automatic defensive fire and cavalry charges?

If I like this game, what game in the series would y’all recommend next?

Thought I would do some homework before I let some Frenchie beat the tar outta me. [;)]

The easiest question first: All the games are patched up to the same level, and are available at http://www.hpssims.com and the NWC plays the Current Version

I haven't really noticed any set group of rules that all agree on (there's a few, like VP for leaders, but not much beyond that)

As for your next game? Alot depends on what interests you. Waterloo is PTW/BGW combined, along with Wavre, and then a huge map that lets you play the entire campaign in a massive 3 day scenario.

Wagram has Wagram and Aspern-Essling, as well as Linz, Raab and Piave.

NRC has the obvious Borodino, but also things like Lubina, Saltanovka, Gorodetcha, Smolnsek and the Berezina.

Jena is in some ways the odd one out. It has Jena and Auerstedt, but it plays somewhat differently, with 10 minute turns and a somewhat different oob structure.

Jon,

Here's the link for the updates on the HPS web site:

The latest version is v. 1.11. I believe that most people in the club use 1.11. If you want to use the Cobexlaw scenarios, however, you should make a copy of the original install since they only work with either version 1.0 or 1.02.

Your key decision is whether you want to play using the default 1-phase system with ADF or the optional manual defense fire which is very much like the BG turn sequence. Personally, I prefer the one-phase system.

As Gary pointed out, what you should get next depends on your interests. One nice thing about getting Wagram next is the option of playing the entire 1809 Campaign. You start the game with Eckmuhl and then carry over the results to Wagram.

Hi Jon
You will find the systems quite different. At first I did not like HPS that much because the graphics were not as good. But don't let that put you off. There are many more interesting scenarios with huge maps and a much better game engine that soon offsets the graphics. I have also plugged in the cobexlaw terrain graphics which makes it much easier on the eye.

One big thing I like is the casualties are not in multiples of 25 and infantry firing in line are much more effective than TS. Meaning you are not totally reliant on shock. Add to this the no melee elimination option and the rock-paper-scissors type effect you get with the TS game mass eliminations is a thing of the past. I recently played Borodino Kutusov turns to fight an inflicted 90000 causalities on the ruskies. This does not happen with No melee eliminations.

Happy to give you a game at some point with manual def fire so you can get the hang of it before you swap to turn based, I have followed that process and now prefer the turn based game but eased into it with manual def fire.

It appears that turns is a huge plus since it speeds up game play.

Is my understanding correct that No Melee Eliminations requires that Partial Retreats be OFF?

What is "Embedded Melee"; how does it work with the turns system?

Where do I get the "cobexlaw terrain graphics" and how do I load them into the Eckmuhl program. I am assuming they have zero impact on game play?

Jon,

Yes, for NME to work properly, Partial Retreats must be OFF.

"Embedded Melee" was a "house rule" designed to put the breaks on the destruction of an entire defensive line with ZOC kills. For the most comprehensive explanation of it, go to the MOE3 webpage and scroll down to the tournament rules. IMO, there is no need to use the embedded melee rules if you are playing with NME ON.
