I had wanted to pick up David Chandler's The Campaigns of Napoleon for some time but shied away because of its price ($60-70 dollars) and length (1100 or so pages). A little while back I saw a used copy for $15.00 on EBay so I figured I would give it a shot.

Now, having just finished reading about Leipzig and heading into the battles in France I must say that this was an absolute steal. I highly recommend it to those few members of the club who haven't read it yet.
Looking back, I realize it would have been worth the brand new price (and then some). I give it 5 stars.

I agree with Colin

A definitive piece of work and an essential addition to any Napoleonic buff's library. My copy is also around 25 years old, possibly a little older and is again well thumbed.

At $15.00 a definate bargain.

Its to this period what Liddell Hart's "History of the Second World War" is to that conflict.

Absolutely an essential for any library.

Add in Paget's volume on the Peninsular War and you have the entire Napoleonic land campaigns in one volume.

Can anyone recommend a book or volumes that deals with the sea struggles of the period? I had Otto von Pitka's book at one time but is there something better out there?

I would suggest:

The Influence of Sea Power upon History, 1660-1805 by Alfred Thayer Mahan
(Goes through Copenhagen and Trafalgar and influenced Theodore Roosevelt among others)

Nelson's Navy: The Ships, Men, and Organization, 1793-1815 by Brian Lavery
(Best book on the subject - period)

Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin Series by Patrick O'Brian
(Fiction but the level of historical detail is simply outstanding)

I think the NWC should incorporate the Talonsoft Age of Sail game once Matrix re-releases it.

One set of books that I love is

Napoleon: A History of the Art of War ( 4 Volumes ) by
Theodore Ayrault Dodge.

The style is a bit dry but there is much detail and good maps

Trafalgar by Mark Adkins (same guy who wrote a book on Waterloo) is excellent. It is actually three books in one, the battle itself, Nelson's entire career, and a thorough review of ships, sailors, seapower and naval organizations of the Napoleonic period. It also covers the battles and manuevers in the years leading up to the climax at Trafalgar (such as St. Vincents and the Nile). Huge book with lots of great maps and color plates and piccy's of ships, and naval and marine uniforms.
