Napoleonic Wargame Club (NWC)

Hello to all,

Some time ago, President Colonel Jones started a thread about "Lively Banter" during multi-player games. I was wondering, does everyone enjoy such harmless "Trash Talk" or am I one of the few who do. Admittedly, it is all too easy to get carried away with it and offend someone, but if done properly, it can be some fun. I take the liberty of posting the exchanges between myself and Major Amos, I hope he doesn't mind my doing so. . .

I am glad you chose a scenario that has our beloved Empereur present to see my heroic efforts to defeat our enemies. If he were not present, I would not have played it. ; )

L’ Empereur scoffs at such a silly notion of a cage, but Prince Murat, the bravest of the brave, is furious about the remark! He and all of his cavalry are riding hard to join this battle. He intends to make you pay for you words! : )

That number DID get larger, darn your Russian artillery and their crews! Yes, there will be many letters written for fallen soldiers, too bad you Russians are not literate enough to write them for yours. LOL

This is just the start of an 18 turn battle and we are already "slinging the manure!" I can only hope that my game play adequately backs up my "Trash Talk!"

I dare not post the "Lively Banter" from the mulpi-player of Marechal Bardon and myself vs. Lieutenat General Peters and Lieutenant Fredel, it just might melt the eyes of the timid!

It doesn't take long to figure out which guys are in it for a friendly game and which ones see the game as a means to their ego end.

I drop them like a rock as soon as I find out that that is all they are interested in doing.

On the other hand there are guys that can admit that their opponents made a nice attack. But the ego trip guys never do that.

Suggestion: enjoy the banter but ask questions about your opponent. Find out who he is and what he has done in life.

Finding out that your opponent died of a massive heart attack or a brain tumor without never getting to know them is sure a good way to suddenly realize that the banter just wasn't as important as "how are you doing today!"

One Spanish fellow in the club died several years back. I was just getting to know him when this happened. He was in his twenties!

I turned in a victory for him in the club records and will always remember that he was a fine fellow. We need more of that kind of guy in the club.

I will admit that Bill Reeves and I got a little rough with each other, but it was absolutely all in fun. He and I are actually playing another game now with somewhat less verbose exchanges.

I like it guys! Good job, Matt and Al. I also agree with Bill about getting to know your opponents. This is a social club of fellow gamers and military historians, at least that is how I view it. Let's be respectful, honorable, but certainly never forget to have fun!

Well dont think too highly of me Mark. If some of these boasters died I would take the win ...

And not lose any sleep over it.

You make some good points sir. We may not all become best friends but we should always be civil and "warm blooded" towards each other. I must say, you and Lieutenant Fredel do liven up the game. I find myself not only wondering what you have done on the battle field, but also what kind of comment did you make. Of course, I then have to try and come up with some sort of retort. It's good fun and I thank you for including me in the game.

Now then, Lieutenant Fredel has sent us a turn. I must try and figure out how to kill you both!

There you go. Fun but not lethal!

It is a blast leading this brigade. I have four guys under my command and I am in CONSTANT communication with each of them in one way or another:

1. Mike Fredel - MP game - we get to chat back and forth about tactics and so on.

2. Bill Drakert - Silesian campaign Maneuver game.

3. David Stotsenburgh - he is playing a Ligny game and is asking me for some pointers.

4. Robert Whalen - has been asking me questions about a scenario to play.

Our brigade along with a few others in the club is going to QUICKLY become the model brigade to follow.

I keep a roster of personal info on them so I know who they are and what they do. I also get game files from them and can see if they need help with deployment. I will not tell them how to play the battle but will send them scenarios with setups that show how to properly setup for a defense or an attack.

Its been really the "golden age" of the club for me. The Prussian army is going places folks! Paris by April!

A veteran Hanoverian officer looks up from his writing upon hearing the boastful words of the Prussian General who not so long ago was the service of his avowed enemy. No detail escapes his penetrating blue gaze as he studies the officer before him who revels in the proximity of his men. The joy...the enthusiasm...the utter dedication to his cause...and the unbounded pride he has in the officers under his command. Yes, this man gets it, he thinks to himself. He understands!

The corners of his mouth turn up into a grin as he lays his quill aside and gently picks up a shot glass of Jager. To your good health, General Peters! Paris by April, eh? Yes, Paris by April indeed! Perhaps my Jagers will even be there to greet you when you arrive. Chuckling softly to himself, he downs the shot of Jager in one gulp before picking up his quill and quietly resuming his work at hand.

If you can't tack a little fun you should crawl back were you came from! I never mind poking fun at funny situation. Now when you live in a swamp why should it up set you if you drink like I do an someone says what the hell did he mean and if you talk funny and use Engfrench! Why let that make a differences one thing I like is kidding and massing around if you not big enough to tack it don't give it! Your Friendly Swamp rat and southern fried gator! Tu ju! "oh did I tell you all why am still a Col"

Why are you still a Col Cliff? I've been around since Dec 1998 and still haven't reached the top rank, but you seem to be progressing even slower, despite the huge number of games you play? It makes no sense...

i think the lively banter is half the fun. winning or losing is secondary to just enjoying the camaderie of the club and meeting new people. i also feel very fortunate to being attached to bill's brigade and being able to pick his mind on how the game works. i am hoping someday bill takes his brigade out in the field against a french brigade in a multiplayer game. so to sum up i am more than happy to say " i fights mit peters! "

Gents! If I gave you the transcript of the banter between myself and President Jones, you would ask for a recall election. And if I shared the exchanges between myself and Mr. Moss, leaving out the cooking, you would think we were a couple of old drunks and line up to challenge us for easy points. Which would, of course, be a grevious error...

I would not mind hearing those cooking tips.

Discussions can range across a wide range of topics, from the usual boasts in the game (I recall Lt. Browne offering to send my French corpses down the river Traun as a faster way to reach Vienna than trying to march through Ebelsberg) to the game mechanics (a discussion between Gen Bijl and myself on what the waterloo game engine allows cavalry to do) to the downright silly (if you've read "Kutuzov Turns to Eat" then you know what happened when Mark Nelms, Neil Henderson, Eugene and I got together to do an MP battle).

In the end, it's a conversation and makes the game enjoyable, even if real life presses in and all you can manage on a few turns is "back over to you and go Patriots!"

Having played both Andy and Jim, I will readily attest to the fact that underestimating them as a pair would be a grave mistake.

I must, in all honesty, state for the record that I disavow any knowledge whatsoever of an exchange of letters between Field Marshall Pfleucke and myself that would in any way bring the prior election process into question or impinge upon my unquestionably honorable record thus far as the President of this fine club.

(Jim, I know I am a little late on the monthly payment of the discretionary funds regularly deposited in your account, but I assure you that they matter will be expeditiously rectified.)

Oh yes, and "Kutusov Turns to Eat" was most humourous and entertaining as well!

Its like Colonel Sanders of KFC fame! You would think by the time he died he would have been General Sanders!

Cliff turned down promotion many times and enjoys being the Mad Cajun Colonel.

I do wish we could see each other's OBD. It would be interesting to see how many times some of you have beaten me!
