Gentlemen

I photographed this fine officer in on a recent visit to The Hermitage in St Petersburg.
My Cyrillic is none too good could one of our Russian brethren identify him and give a little history.

At this point my eyesight is too precarious to make out what is written underneath that portrait. If I could see the text I could tell you exactly who it is.

But having said that, when I was making my NRC mods I discovered that the entire collection of portraits from the Hermitage War room is online in two places. You can get the portraits via the Hermitage site (alphabetized by first name -- go figure) but also by going through the wiki lists of generals who fought in the war of 1812. There are a couple of other specialty sites that give particularly good versions of the portraits of people they are interested in.

And that is why there are so many good quality color portraits of Russian generals in my mods.

If you're looking for a portrait, try going to the Hermitage collection first. There are an awful lot of generals in that gallery. What is amazing is that most of the paintings were done by the same artist.

Thanks David

Poor photograph but I was going along a wall full.
Wonderful place, the wife dragged me out kicking and screaming
