The thing about signature and avatar use is the restrictions do not go into force until someone goes to change their signature.

You can see the below link is a painting I use, that is already greatly reduced in size and still doesn't meet the restrictions. Any smaller and it looses it's meaning and details....same goes for some of the other artwork I use to tell a" story" or write something up to celebrate an achievement or what have you. I view the forums mostly on a PC, so the images are always small to me....

Also the ability for larger text too would be nice, so we can make larger someone's name or a key info point in an announcement...

Thanks! :)

Well in the signatures editor I can set the font sizes larger, here it seems to be only normal/smaller/tiny, indeed biiger could be useful sometimes as bold text isn't working as the text seems to use bold as standard, at least I don't see any effect when using bold text.

Just wondering if there can be a difference between what image size is used "inside" the posting and what is used in the signature.

So for now we are at 200x200 for avatars, but signature with 600(hight)x400(wide) seems unpractical, usually the screens are wider than higher and so 600(wide) and 400(high) would be what I prefer.

@Scott
Instead of making it all smaller you could use the original size and cut out the "main action" in that picture.
I assume it is the officer and soldiers in the center who really matter or?

I went ahead and deleted my signature. If it is causing issues for Pierre, it's not worth trying to figure out what image size might or might now work.

If it makes his life easier if we all have text signatures, I'm all for it.

What about 800X600 for a post? it seems reasonable.

I am never attaching a picture to the forum, I always use an external server (my flickr or tinypic).

I could do that. Some images are very action centric already. I am going to have to readjust how I do things......I already have in the two posts I made. A bit of tinkering. Also reminds me, as I do redesigns I should try to reduce the use, publicly, of PNG's and use those behind the scenes to do edits, as they care much larger file sizes than JPGs & GIFs are.

Frankly, I don't understand why it was ever a problem in the first place.

I am not going to bother with a signature until someone makes a decision -and then I will go with whatever it is. The image thing - well yeah so you resize and then post a link to a full size image somewhere else in the body of text -I do it all of the time on boards -it gives you an idea of what you are looking at - and then the link to actually go see it - and I do this because I hate causing horizontal scrolling.

If it is about wanting to fit things nicely on a tablet -ok fine -- most of those resize images automatically anyway (actually I don't know of any that don't -but who knows- maybe one exists).

It can't be about server load - that happens on the image's host site. If it is here -then sure, it does impact it I am sure -but if it is elsewhere- then the only problem it causes is when there is a problem on the host site -and then you get the blank box with the x in it.

If it is about load time - then you slice up the image (blame Fireworks tutorials on that one...) - and in effect it loads an part of the image at a time. Incidentally, just limiting the image size here does nothing about the ability to string along what looks to be an infinite amount of images -so technically speaking when you add a dimension limit -you haven't really done anything apart from limiting the size of the slice itself.

Anyway please decide on a policy, go with it - and I will work with whatever it is... no dramas (ok - comedies, maybe -- but definitely no dramas.) ;) :eagle:

Pierre

Most of the Russian Officer signatures are well above the limits you suggest and also illustrates the regimental flag. I would appreciate your recommendations on how these could be reduced in size but still be visible and retain their original historical uniqueness.

Just a note, the smaller pics might lead to the use of more text what isn't generally bad but I didn't find away to arrange my text on the same level to the left and/or right of the picture but only above and/or below what makes the overall signature again much higher than wide.
AFAIK there must be some custom BBcode added to allow a function like wrapping text around pictures or something like that, but that's an Admin job, I'm sure Pierre has enough to do but I thought I mention now in case he plans changes.

Now does this look so bad 300X205. There is ample room to add the other two graphics as well, 300HX400W.

Pierre

The downsized graphic looks okay to me. However, before, i make recommendations to Prince Repnin and the other officers of the Russian Contingent, i would appreciate seeing the Guard star and Regimental flag graphics which accompanied my original signature.

They are small enough, unless Pierre thinks that is a manipulation of the restriction.
A lot members have in their bigger signature pics their medals, with smaller signature pics that is unlikely to fit so I wouldn't wonder of they at least add a second picture to the signature to get the medals in or put links to all medals they have into the signature although that might give problems with the 500 character signature limit.

Disclaimer, I am not that great at French grammar (or abbreviations)... so I have no idea if my text based signature even makes sense in French :D I imagine someone might point it out to me if that is the case.

Ironically I kind of like the understated Imperial Eagle (that I ripped out of the Bautzen game graphics.). . . although I think I might see how it goes at the start of the sig as opposed to the end. I guess either way it works - in that it easily identifies my side for club purposes.... although now I am not too sure about my avatar design ... too many eagles...

Yea if someone has a clue how these "extensions" on the French numbers work I would like to know it too.
