As the French troops streamed to the rear it appeared as if the day was lost. Bonaparte had bottled up Melas in Alessandria only to see the Austrians emerge early on 14 June and break the French line and cause it to fall back in a mainly disorderly fashion to the rear. With Bonaparte's "right arm" General Desaix absent to the south things looked grim ...

Relive the history and take on either the Austrians or French in one of the most balanced scenarios in the Napoleon's Battles series games. As Bonaparte can you hold the Austrians long enough to buy time for Desaix's Corps to return to the battlefield and win or as Melas will you decimated the French army and send Desaix reeling as well?

I have to say that Marengo is a fun game to play and a very good test.

Many French players seem to lack the ability of pulling back when its time to get out of the front line positions. Would love to hear back from players that actually did retreat to await the arrival of the remainder of Desaix's corps and setup a new defensive line further to the rear.

It worked for me, Bill.

Played twice.

Both times I held the front line as long as I could inflict casualties and then pulled back when I started to take too much fire.

Minor victory and Draw- with me being within 50 points of victory in the draw.

Marengo was my fav. battle as a teen wargame player (Marengo from the Napoleon at War Quad) and I made it a point to study every strategy possible so I could win at conventions. I placed 2nd at our convention in the LA area.

Its DEFINITELY the best scenario for play balance that I have designed. You can win as either side with Draws and Minor Victory being the most common.

I may still have my diagrams showing where the French line should be at particular turns during the battle in order for them to hang on ....

While you probably would never see 342 French cavalry run over many Austrian grenadier battalions as happened in the battle, the French do have a good cavalry force to use later in the battle if they ration their cavalry early on.
