A defintion we could use to describe our playing types.

Leftist: Old School type playing. No Weak ZOC, 3 phases, no Rifle E, and no Line D.

Rightist: New School, For Weak ZOC, single turns, and Line D.

So are you an Extreme Leftist, Semi-Leftist, or Semi-rightis, Extreme Rightist. Or Neutral (somewhere inbetween)?

What what are you?

Weak ZOC, Single Phase, Line D for sure, fer sure. But Rifle Effects are anathema.

"....like a bridge over troubled waters...."

I have one foot in each camp. Playing War of 1812 I like single phase games, and when playing 1776 I like using the multi-phase format.

I enjoy playing phases, except I keep forgetting to change formations before I move my troops , and I enjoy playing single turns since the pace of the game goes quicker.

The ability to withdraw from the battlefield (rout, flee, run-away!) is critical to many of my battle plans, so I prefer Weak ZOCs and Partial Retreats.

I feel line disruption, isolation, flank morale modifiers, quality melee and fire, ADF*, and VPs for leaders all enhance the historical feel for the game.

I think with my new mods (for 1776) that Rifle Effects can be used as well. This is because the range of the rifle has reduced to 6 hexes and the number of units possessing a rifle in the oob is about 2%. (In my new "I'll Take It!" battle only 800 men out of nearly 40,000 Colonials have rifles. If memory serves me correctly.)

* The optional ADF rule is different than single phase. It allows one to set the engagement ranges of your troops on defense, and fires your troops during the Defensive Fire Phase.

I prefer the right wing on this side of the debate since it seems more interesting to me, but I can just as easily whip up on one of those lefties as well, after all been doing it for some 33 years. The left side of this debate hasn't changed a bit except some minor tweaking since the old days of Avalon Hills Africa Korps. I remember the great excitement I had when 1914 came out. Now that was a game! It had a new set of rules! No more ZOC wipe outs! Reckon that dates me! Whoohoo!

I reside in the realms of ambiguity. I, quite often, allow my opponents to choose the options, except I generally will NOT play with Rifle Effects ON.
